How To Make An Upcycled Boho Dress From a Nightgown , Sheet and Lace

Boy, this upcycling video was a labor of love and a great example of pure determination. In this tutorial, we create a gorgeous boho/prairie maxi dress from a thrifted nightgown, sheet and lace, then dye it with Rit Dyemore. I explain the process every step of the way, striving to be as clear and detailed as possible. With that being said, you get to see behind the scenes and watch an upcycling sewist sweat! Everything didn't go as planned, but I carried on and hopefully set a good example of how to recover from mishaps that are sure to happen now and then.

Sometimes you just have to set creative projects aside and come back to them - right? The fuller sleeves are beautiful and adding the extra lace and crochet pieces took this dress to the next level! I loved learned more sewing tricks with the use of the sheets, nightgown, buying lace lots from eBay, dyeing the slip as a liner and using Rit More Dye! By the way, you look lovely in the dress, not washed out at all! 🥰🤪

I really love your style and videos! That being said, I've been a sewist for 50 years. So may I give you a little tip?It's rolling up because you need to gather a flat trim just slightly to ease it around a curved area. Try That next time. I think you will be very happy with the result.

So glad you kept working on it. An easy "gathering" hack is to do a large zigzag stitch over fishing line that has a weight (or giant washer) on the end. You can pull the line and it gathers the fabric.

I’ve found another of my tribe. I’ve watched so many of your videos, your creative process is a joy to watch. Sometimes projects just need to marinate. Overnight , a week, a month… you can’t rush this. I find that mono coloured projects often trip me up. How could you doubt your beautiful brain? It’s not put a step wrong creatively so far. Tracy, your dye jobs always comes out great!!! I like your sleeves. Working on my coat dress upcycle. I turned reg button sleeves into the full sleeves. I slit them at the bottom and inserted a mesh material with embroidered florals and then added a super wide semi rouched lace trim around entire cuff.....work in progress....

I find when I get to the point where my project stops being fun giving it a "time out" works wonders. Sometimes, it's just a short time, but I've waited 6 months or more. When I have fresh eyes and energy I usually can rescue the project. Some are doomed but that's not the norm. I love the dress.
