I use grits, sunflower hearts and dried mealworms. I smear the mixture on the barks of trees, about 8 foot up. Carolina wrens, North Carolina chickadee and my little nut hatchery love it! Downeys and red bellies fight for it!

Nice! Thanks for the idea. I have a ton of hickory bark for crafting, but no pinecones. I have a potted tree outside that i wanted to make a little Christmasy with birdseed ornaments and was trying to think of a good idea of what i can slather this mix onto. I will snip some ornamental shapes into my bark and add a hole and tie to hang. I think I'll even shape a Christmas tree out of bark and slather this on, maybe add some dowels and hang it the base of my big oak trees : )

If you put the peanut butter in the microwave for 15-30 seconds to soften it a bit it makes it much easier to stir in the other ingredients. I make it every week and am always experimenting with different combinations of ingredients. Sometimes I just smear it right onto the tree just above a small limb so the birds can sit there and enjoy a snack. I often use chunky peanut butter.

That is good thought. I do that with my suet plugs before mashing them into my suet log.

I got a really good deal on 5 pounds of walnuts, I used 2 pounds of them for the birds and saved the rest for Christmas baked goods. I made a couple of batches of crunchy walnut butter to spread onto the trees for my birds. I’m now going to add some extra seeds and nuts to it, thanks for sharing this with us.

Either works well. I don’t think their is enough salt to cause any problems for them

Thank you very much for this information. I have some chunky all natural peanut butter that I forgot I had in the refrigerator and wondered if It would be ok to use to make some suet. I think it will be ok, but wanted to make sure. I have some cranberries and patashio seeds I want to use also. Thoughts?

@@andraford4172 That sounds like a mix birds would love and benefit from.

Thank you. I have been using straight peanut butter and haven’t had much activity. I’m going to use your method.

Peanut butter alone is too tacky for most birds. Good luck.

That mixture would work in a plastic mold of used suet mold then freeze it for an hour and put it in a suet cage.

Absolutely. Some use old yogurt cups.

Hello Mark, I think I will try this. Can you use any peanut butter? If not can you recommend some please. Thanks for video. 😁👍

Yes, crunchy or smooth. Some may opt for an organic peanut butter. You are welcome!

I thought I was purchasing a good peanut butter (Laura Scudders) it has 1% less salt can I still use this? I've been checking for utube videos about suet. Just trying to educate myself on it.

Question. When to use lard?
@MarksBackyardBirds Жыл бұрын
I don't use lard, only true suet (internal body fat of a cow). Some mix lard with peanut butter but only during the cold weather months.

I know this is an old video but you don’t mention if peanut butter with sugar is ok or if we should use the sugar free type?

is it ok for bird to eat roasted peanut butter?

I would think so. I wouldn’t use the honey roasted type though.
