Facebook won't let me upload the MP4 file format when I try and add the image. I changed to animated gif, but the preview in the ad just shows a white picture with no animations!

You don't mention that Canva says you can not edit their templates and use it for commercial use don't forget that 😏 I really hate/ love canva you can not design like in Illustrator or others softwares there is so much restrictions but its ok for a quick design and is an amazing tool to gain time
