As someone who has shot on 16mm before and graded it in davinci, I think you guys are pushing the look a bit too far. It may come down to taste here, but if you want to actually emulate the film stock instead of created a final graded look you should tone down the entire thing by about 25%. You can tell in a lot of these clips the the colors are getting too saturated and clipping (probably because of the 8-bit footage) and the shadows feel lifted. Film CAN look like this, but in actual movies the look is not pushed this far so that it is easier on the audience's eyes. I see this a lot with digital emulations where the colorists push the look farther than it should go to overcompensate for it being DSLR/mirrorless footage.

amazing tutorial, just wondering why didn't you touched the halation part ? it plays one of the main role in this grading. like if the light on face is high the halation goes way to red and you should've showed how to adjust it less or high according to the requirement.
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 жыл бұрын
Hey firstly thank you!! Also we completely forgot to go over halation until after we uploaded the video 😅 because as you say it’s v much key in film emulation. There’s halation that is automatically added using the powergrade but we just completely forgot to talk about it. We do apologise. We might make a KZbin post just to show how to adjust the halation

Hey! No you don’t, but the thing that won’t work is the film grain node if you’re using Davinci Resolve free version. But as a work around we have free film grain overlays on our website that you’re able to overlay on top of your footage to still get the film texture: meliorstudios.com/store/p/free-film-grain

Yes! Halation uses a linear method rather than Davinci resolves Halation fx, therefore you can use it with the free version of Davinci resolve and it’s easier for your computer to process too. Hey Renzo! We always try to expose correctly, in this case making sure we expose +2 stops for the skin when shooting in slog2. We do still get grain and noise in our footage but exposing correctly helps a lot. For any of the grain left we tend to use the Denoise tool in Davinci Resolve. We don’t think we could live without it, especially for 8 bit footage

Hello! Nice work! I am soo thinking of buying the power grade. I already bought Juan Maleras Kodak Power grade and Film convert and I am still not achieving the look I am looking for. Maybe I am just bad 😂 I got a question: how did you change the magenta colour in the lips 😅?
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios Жыл бұрын
Hey Yasemin, This is the only film emulation powergrade we've used and it's worked a treat for us in enabling us to create the look we wanted. And with lips usually being more saturated than the rest of the skin you can use the the qualifer to create a mask on the lips, selecting the magenta areas, then simply shift the hue towards the oranges. You can do this all when selecting the entire skin to shift the colours away from magenta. Another way is to use the colour warper and shift the red points towards the yellow

On the A7iii slog3 had no greater effect than Slog2 due to its sensor. But slog3 is much flatter than Slog2 which makes it harder to grade as well well the image falls apart more easily compared to Slog2 on the A7iii. On the A7siii slog3 can be used no doubt but for what we found Slog2 give a much cleaner image

My footage looks really flat and bad after selecting the right input color space and input gamma in the CST node. Am I doing something wrong? It's just S-Log2 footage of my Sony A7iii (S-Gamut)
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Joran, we’re sorry to hear that, the footage when CST is completed will be a little bit flat especially with cineon but shouldn’t be super flat like a log profile. If that’s the cast it’s probably your CST settings. Make sure you double check your camera settings, I.e. colour space and colour gamma. If you’re using S-gamut make sure you’ve selected s-Gammut in the correct field of the CST. If you’ve used something other than s-gamut such as ITU.709, make sure you’re selecting rec.709. Let us know if you’re able to resolve this

This was very helpful, fantastic video. i have an issue when i use the cineprint, it completely destroys the footage, comes out looking like a grainy oversaturated mess. I'm a complete novice to davinci resolve and filmmaking hence i can't figure out how to solve this. i shoot in Blackmagic raw on my pocket 4k. what would be the inputs for the CST. would love any sort of advice. great tutorial
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Firstly thank you, we’re glad you found it helpful:) for your black magic 4 are you shooting on Gen 1,2, or 3 colour space. Dependedining on these put black magic design 4 Film Gen 1 or 2/3 into the input colour space. Then for input gamma select black magic designs 4K film. And this should give you a shoot base. Then use the exposure and WB to adjust the look to your liking. We hope this helps!
