Lee, just for your info, in India, we eat all parts of a banana tree. We serve food on leaves, make salad with flowers, curry with stem, fritters with green banana, eat ripened banana, finally throw it in garden as a fertiliser 😃

Wow! I knew that fritters are made from flowers of the banana etc but don’t know how to prepare them, also I never knew about currying the stem? If you have any information/ recipes I would be so grateful! I live in Portugal and have a fair few banana ‘trees ‘ and would like to make more use of them! Unfortunately the bananas seldom ripen here but I do get lots of flowers and bunches of baby green bananas! Thanks in advance!

I feel so proud of myself. I just started growing a basil plant. I don’t know anything about gardening whatsoever, but it just looked like my plant was struggling at one point and one day I was eating a banana, and I was like “let me just throw this in the soil” and I guess it worked because the basil plant has been thriving ever since. I never knew that banana peels were used as fertilizer. Lol I did something right 💪🏾❤️

Only recently discovered your channel, it’s great. I’ve been growing vegetables since I was eleven, helping my father, but only recently became aware of square foot gardening (how dumb was that?😀) Now in my late 60’s with various health issues and disabilities, and recently having moved into a small bungalow, raised beds and square foot gardening are the only way to go for me! Being able to sit and garden, not having to dig over the plot each year, are a godsend. No more strained back! My wife has a dehydrator so all my banana skins are nicely dried and the old coffee grinder has been pressed into service. Just started going through all your videos but can't find one about quantities of banana fertiliser so I've just been sprinkling it on the surface and missing it in with my fingers. Dude, you're talking MY language! 👍 Only I dry mine outside, along with eggshells, that I use for calcium. Once they snap, I crumble them into my coffee grinder, & transfer the powdered Banana peel into an empty coffee creamer dispenser (same thing with the powdered eggshells) ~Coffee grounds ~Eggshells ~Banana skins. And that's ALL I need to do for my garden. And I get the best results.

I'm just amazed how I managed to not find your channel before. I'm binging it the whole morning. I usually make sort of a tea of banana peels for my plants, but drying and braking it in to powder sounds way better, since you keep basically all the nutrients in it. I cut the banana peals into small pieces and dig them into the soil surrounding my tomato plants. Drying, then grinding them should give better results.

I dry and grind in food processor. It’s also more slow release when in solid form too :)

Thank you for the video :) . Coffee grounds and banana peels can be applied directly around the rose plant without composting. Banana peels are a good source of potassium for roses. And they also help improve the immune system of roses.

You're my favorite garden channel 😊 we est a lot of bananas in our home. I keep them in the freezer as well and the kids make 'banana ice cream' shakes almost daily in summer. My compost is probably 50% banana peels lol hint *less ripe bananas are very prebiotic 👍 great for peeps like me with digestive issues

We're moving in our old house soon where there is a large garden and I started storing some dry compost in preparation, so that banana powder is a great idea. I've only stored bread brown paper bags (cut into small pieces) and crushed eggshells. Now add this in my collection. ^_^ Thanks.

Yay! Now I have a reason to tell my husband I'm not weird for liking partly green 🍌 and that it's actually beneficial to eat them that way! I don't care for yellow banana with the brown spots.😝 They are way too sweet for me when they turn darker yellow with the brown spots. My Lionhead rabbits love bananas as a treat so, there's always bananas around our house. I have one rabbit that actually chews on the skins too! I'll definitely be trying the banana and water break down trick to make a fertilizer for my 🌺 hibiscus and 🌹 roses.

Another way is by adding the banana skins to a worm bin and let the worms break the skins down into their castings to use on the garden. Just don't add the stems, those take forever to break down, add those to a hot compost pile to break those down.

I would add that it's important to cut off the stem and black tip of the banana before letting it dry in direct sunlight. I also recommend from experience to not allow it dry indoors as a mold will develop over days and that will attract flies. You can heat them in an oven, but it could blacken them and char them too much. I used a blender to grind them. You can use a pastry brush to clean out the blender after.

Excellent! By the end of June I apply dry bananas skin to my rose bushes and they come back as big and strong like in the spring. Good to know other ways to do it; i just waited for the peels to be totally dry (takes time, weeks). Can’t wait to try some tea on my other flowers. Thanks for the video!

Would you recommend using the banana fertilizer in addition to vermiculite? I typically just add compost to my plants when it time to fertilize. Should I be doing both?

When I’ve processed the ripe bananas for dehydrating I put the skins in the blender with water and then feed it back to the new pups coming up since I don’t feed the plants anything else.

I eat about 1 banana a day about 350 out of 365 days a year. I should have enough good fertilizer this fall and next early spring for a good flower, berry and veggie garden next year, and enough for my neighbors, too. Thanks.. oh, and I will add some ground up dried banana skins in a couple of weeks to make my flower garden more glamorous late this summer.
