Diamond tipped bits are made of _flakes_ of diamond that are joined with metal. When the metal between these flakes gets too hot (i.e. when you use them on metal or soft woods), the bit will start to come apart. They can, however, be used on stones, gems, glass, ceramics, bone, ore petrified wood. Also a tip that I know will come in handy for you in the future, when trying to drill hardened steel, pick up some masonry drill bits from the hardware store. Hardened steel will destroy most other drill bits.

It's incredible just how useful a dremel is, and considering how (reasonably) cheap they are there's really no reason not to have one. I've been looking at a lot of things I'd like to try building, and then I think "now if only I had a dremel". I finally wised up and hopefully Santa will bring me one for Christmas.

Never use diamond tools when working in steel or iron, as diamond(carbon) dissolves in iron/steel. :)

Grant, the enemy of diamond blades and tips is heat. My teacher once told this to me and it truly works. Every few seconds quench the piece to keep it reasonably cool, or the abrasive will wear off rapidly.

Yeah, you do NOT want to use Diamond on metal- diamond is really only for stone, glass, ceramic, or gems (which are a kind of stone, I suppose). And they work best if they're submerged in water or cutting oil. For metal, even/especially hardened steel like that, you definitely want to use cutting/grinding wheels- but expect them to get used up while doing so. Honestly, for that sort of light edge cleanup with large radii like on these Batarangs, I'd probably use cheapo stone grinders- the little cylindrical orange or grey dealies you get in combo-kits.
