This year we simplified the wall panels by using 1/4 baltic birch wood and screws. They're lightweight, easy to remove, and look amazing!

I took the same approach on the wood (3mm marine plywood) but opted to use 3m’s Dual Lock tape ( it’s like industrial Velcro), so no screws! It’s flawless and easy to remove. Looking good, great progress

Nice work in templating. I initially bought some templates from an upfitter, but quickly realized their templates wouldn't match mine perfectly, so I did much the same as you. I however utilized only factory mounting holes to attach. My panels are covered in foam and fabric too. They are very echo reducing;). Someday, I'd like to show my build. I'm up in Tahoe a lot too, I have family.

I'm curious what thickness of wood paneling did you use before covering them? I'm looking to start mine soon and I've got a similar design. I'm thinking 1/8 baltic birch, 1/8 foam and then covered with Sileather.
@vita-girl4345

@@davidwathen2004 I used 1/8th inch plywood. I'd get unfinished playwood as you'll glue the foam/fabric to it. If you get finished, you have to rough it up for the glue to do it's thing.

Your van is coming together beautifully! You might like this old painter's tip learned from my dad: use a hammer and a flathead screwdriver to tap a few slotted holes around the can in the lowest part of the rim, right down in the groove the lid fits into. Excess paint in the rim will drain back into the can, reducing the drips over the side that you've gotta slurp up with a brush. Subbed! Looking forward to seeing what's next. Cheers from the Motherlode, down in the Sierras just south of you! ;)

Awesome man. I love the clean desigh you made... it is the greatest self made van build I have ever seen. Thank you for the inspiration. Soon I'll start on my own project. It will look kinda similar to yours. Some differences though like: as soon as the E-Van is avaliable on L4 size, that will be my basis, I also want to have a space for 4 (therefore a skyup on the roof), I plan to have a recirculating shower and, only if possible, all tanks into the van floor. I also am designing a way to get the urin and the waste water of the shower system directly into the grey water tank.

That's very beautiful! You could have a thinner mattress in the back with no ill effects and gain half that mattress space back. And, you can wash thinner foam mattresses. Either used compressed foam (around that width shoved into a smaller case) or pressed foam (a sandwich of pressed outers around an uncompressed inner - still 3.5").

I stumbled upon your videos a week or so ago and have watched all of this build so far. Awesome job and thank you for taking the time to make them. This latest build is pretty much identical to what I want to do in a Ford Transit (high and extended - the van; not me and my credit card debt). I'm interested to hear what the interior sounds like when you are on paved but somewhat rough road. Rattles and squeaks drive me crazy and eliminating as many of them during the build process as possible is important. I'll most likely end up buying a completed Class B (I really like the Embassy builds), but I have enjoyed watching your build progress. Looking forward to seeing what's next. Take care.

We are building on a new 170 4x4 as well. We have been waiting 16 months since the order date and we should see it in a week or so. For our walls we will do similar to as you have done by attaching them directly to the van metal ribs. Rather than screws we will actually rivet them in place. In you first van build you used ⅛" ply but in this one you are using ¼" ply. Can you let us know why you did not go with the ⅛" this time around? Cheers!

I've thought about this, but the challenge would be to deal with the inevitable shifting down that would happen from bumpy rides. I know there has to be a solution, but I haven't quite solved it. I think that's why cars and vans always use the plastic push-in clips.
@craigj6277
@craigj6277 2 жыл бұрын
@@moneypitvan6378 good point about the push in clips, I still think there are applications where the hook and lock might work. Maybe smaller panels where the panel is a snug fit and the weight of the panel is being distributed along a surface and not being supported by the hook and lock. Just holding it against the wall and not supporting the weight. I enjoy your build, good job! I thought your use of magnets for the ceiling was genus, I like the thinking outside the box. Love to see a follow up on how the magnets worked out down the road. I enjoy your videos.
