Several years back I was in taking an art class in a quaint old town in north Florida. During our lunch break on the first day, I took a walk around the town to take photos of all the interesting architecture, beach, store fronts, etc... Something "reddish/purple" caught my eye at the end of an alley as I walked by. I turned around, walked down the alley a few feet and the entire alley was FULL of Beautyberry bushes!!! At the time, I had no idea what they were. I asked everyone I saw if they knew the name of the gorgeous berry bush and surprisingly no one knew the bushes were there!! Did some research when I returned home and discovered they were indeed named Beautyberries! Wish I had known about harvesting and making jelly at the time. I could of had a feast - LOL!! Thank you for sharing your expertise and reminding me how beautiful they really are!!

Do they only grow in southern states? I live in MN. I've never seen or heard of them. I am a messianic believer. Was so happy to find you on you tube. Enjoy everything you do. Especially your Torah readings/teachings. Blessings to you. I'm just learning about foraging, tinctures, salves, etc.

Hello Kathy, thank you! Yes, they grow primarily in the southeastern US. However I do know you can find them at nurseries. They are generally hardy in garden zones 5 - 11, so I don't think they would be likely to survive your winters there.

When I was a kid in upstate NY at Lake Ontario we had those kind of rocky out crops. Had to be careful when climbing around them because the copperheads liked to sleep in the nooks and crannies. I encountered one while exploring, scared the bejabers out of me. Didn’t strike at me, I was lucky. Be cautious.

Oh definitely! Never put your hands, feet, etc. where your eyes can't see first. We have copperheads and rattlesnakes here. Glad you were ok and didn't get bit!

Have beauty berry everywhere in my woods. Mamma deer bring their babies to forage. Good to know about the leaves being bug repellent. The jelly is just a bit too much sugar for our house. If I had clotted cream I might make an exception for my biscuits.

I love the pot you cooked the jelly in!! What is it? I bought my first Smithey because of your videos. I ended up with the griddle first. I haven't used it yet. Maybe this coming weekend...pancakes! I've had a miserable time seasoning my Lodge. It finally went into the black hole of the garage never to be seen again. I can already tell by the smooth surface that Smithey is the way to go!

I was gifted a American beauty Berry last year. It’s still in a pot because I’m relocating and doing the garden so I haven’t figured out where to put it exactly but it does like the sun and where I have it on the side of my house right now it does like it, but I need to put it in ground because I want to get the canes to spread out for next year to have a better Might take a couple years for me to get a whole bunch to make some jelly But I was thinking, can you pull a stem and propagate it with some hormones or something maybe try that and then you can or if you can uproot that one that was closer by so you could put it in your garden area but somewheres sunny 🌱

Here’s what I just found online specifically about beautyberries: Take cuttings: Choose a robust branch with a thickness of at least 0.6 centimeters (0.24 inches) that is one to three years old. Cut about 15 centimeters (6 inches) from the base to the middle (two to three nodes) in early spring or summer. Soak in rooting powder: Soak the base of the branch with rooting powder. Plant cuttings: Drill holes vertically in sterilized soil with a thin wooden stick to prevent the branch epidermis from rubbing directly against the soil. Plant the cutting and firm the soil gently.
