Great video only thing I suggest is to cut lines instead of drilling holes to stop media balls from getting stuck in the holes and stopping water flow

I think I understand the concept, but in the video the siphon only fully drains with the pump off. Shouldn't the full drain occur even with the pump running? If so, then wouldn't it be important to not overpower your full siphon drain with too large of a pump? Or, am I wrong and you need to turn the pump off/on with a timer? Thanks for sharing
@DIYGARDENWITHBB3 жыл бұрын
Hi there ! It's auto bell siphon no need to use timer . The grow beds will fully flood and drain automatically and the pump running . To understand better check this video www.reddit.com/r/aquaponics/comments/nelbk0/if_youre_having_a_problem_with_your_bell_siphon/?

If the rate that the water is pumped into the grow bed is the same as the rate that the siphon drains the grow bed, will the grow bed ever be fully drained?
@paulwilliams56114 ай бұрын
Just need a valve on the input line from the pump to modify the water flow into the bed. Lower the input volume if its too fast and wont allow the bed to fully drain.

the PVC pipe sizes depending on your grow bed , use the same sizes I used.

ok but can you make the water that is drawn go up higher than the level where the water is being drawn out? I'm wondering if this could be used to create a continuous loop water feature for a small waterfall for passively aerating a small pond.

@@DIYGARDENWITHBB Thanks for the quick reply. I have used a 40 mm pipe. I did a test in my bath and there it went perfectly with my bath tap fully open. I think my pumps are too slow for a 40mm pipe the fastest was 400l/h. Had another question can elbow be under water in the reservoir?

The water should flow in LESS than water going out. So you had to change the water pump's pipe to smaller size to give enough time which the water inside the bed to flow out. I have tried you method, it only works like that ( pipe going in should half(size) than pipe going out(at least 2x size of pipe going in).

Hi, why a bell siphon is needed? and what is the benefit? Thx
@DIYGARDENWITHBB3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Bell siphon needed because you need to Flood and Drain Your Media Beds Why Flood and Drain Your Media Beds? the benefit : your plant roots need water and nutrients, but they also need oxygen. When you flood your media bed-fill the bed with water-the nutrient-rich water from your fish tank bathes the roots and your rocks. But if you leave your plant roots constantly submerged in water, they will attempt to adapt, and that effort takes energy away from food production. Growing Options When you drain your media bed-suck out the water-air will rush into the spaces between the rocks in your grow bed. Air is 21 percent oxygen, and that oxygen will dissolve in the water remaining on the surfaces of the rocks and roots and can be absorbed by the living things in your grow bed. These will include your plant roots and the bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrate. This could also include worms, if you added them to your system.

Nice work! I have a question. If the water pump were to die at max water level, or just before the max water level before it started to enter the drainage pipe would that mean that the water would be stuck in there until the pump is replaced?

@@DIYGARDENWITHBB Thanks for the reply I will watch this video. Would we be able to overcome this problem if the pump was sealed from the bottom making the water intake come from underneath - so that gravity would cause the water to run back down through the tubing/pump back into the reservoir?
