Additional tip: Plant it on the the ground, not in a pot. This way, your tree will grow faster and create a larger trunk. Just make sure to put a flat slab/tile under its root section before you plant it so the roots will grow sideways not directly under. This way, it'll be easier to dig the tree and create a flat root system when you transfer it to a pot when the time comes.

How many years would it save if we plant it in the ground or in a larger pot
@maemae1752 Жыл бұрын
I’m trying to find a video on how to take a young tree from the garden to make it bonsai. (Even if I have to replant it with a slab underneath. I’m just not sure how to go about it. I have 4 little Japanese maples which have grown near my large one and they are all about 3-4 years old. Any advice would be appreciated

I would recommend to plant it in a colander pot instead of the soil directly, use some sacrifice branches in your main branches and the apex. Following these steps you will get a thicker trunk with the "tachiagari" principle, and you will get a great "nebari" structure in the main roots. Additionally, you can use stones or clay to create an aerial structure or prepare the tree to become an "ishizuki". You can get a "15 years old" look in 3 years using colander pots (5 times faster than using a normal pot), just be careful while feeding or watering your trees. For example, if you feed more than necessary, pines will become a bland wood tree and bending or shaping the tree can be difficult 'cause of its flexibility, and if you water too much your pine will have larger needles, I recommend to start with popular species because you can find a lot of information about how to take care of them. On the other hand, if you plant in the soil directly without pruning roots or controlling the nutrients your tree receives, the plant will be healthy but it won't follow the bonsai principles of tachiagari, nebari, etc.

My family is treating apple trees in similar way for more than 50 years. Trees are growing in our garden and are obviously much larger than bonsai however the principle is same. Every summer we have to shear majority of new branches (we call them "wolves", they are long and straight) to strengthen rest of branches and to make trees compact and bushy.

Sorry, I was not able to find a definitive answer. But after more than a year I can tell you from experience that cutting the stump without a paste did not end well. The plant died.
