Hey there! this is going to be the beginning of a mini series I'll be doing explaining how to make breakcore within Renoise.
In this episode, I try and demonstrate the effects of using a higher LPB (Lines per beat) in Renoise, and why it is crucial to try and explore what dimensions higher LPB's can give you to your breakchops. I also cover some key techniques on how to improve your breakchops and some things i rely a lot on when chopping breaks, in regards to effect and volume mechanisms.

2:13 Beginning the chop
9:07 How can we improve the breakchop through effect commands
18:23 The key to making actually breakcore, keep it varied between bars!
18:55 Beginning the second break pattern chop

I remember learning Renoise by re-creating "Leviticus - Burial" following a video by Owen Palmer back in 2018. Good times!

That’s awesome! I learnt bits from here n there, but mostly just through trial and error. It’s a fun DAW for sure x)

Maybe i should finally give making music a try. One thing i was curious about is how would you mess with vocals?

With vocals it’s not too hard! If you just want to extract certain vocals, you just manually slice the waveform and take the parts you want! If you want to chop alongside an accapella or long excerpt, you should find the bpm of what you’re chopping too and then insert as one note at C#300 and then enable the “autoseek” function at the bottom left of the sampler page, where the waveform is displayed. Then either chop at the BPM of the excerpt or sometimes I chop to it double the bpm, since I work with faster pace genre! I might make a tutorial on how to chop alongside stuff and insert samples n stuff next video x)

Really great video, really inspiring and made me pick up Renoise again! One question though, similar to @Bvilches07 question - When you set it to 16 lines per beat, what's the rationale behind making the sequence 176 lines long? I would have thought it would be set to something like 256 lines so there was an even number like 16 beats to the bar? It sounds great in the video, but when I started my own tune using this, I immediately noticed that it's an odd time and seems to jump back. Is it a personal preference or am I misunderstanding something (which is extremely likely!). I want to understand so I have a future reference when I change the LPB. Hope that made sense and didn't sound too stupid! Thanks again.

Thanks for the comment! Your comment definitely made sense and I believe you can work out time signatures and such through maths. I’m no expert at all of it cause I usually just make tracks based on whatever I feels right for what I’m going for, but if I’m not mistaken 7/4 time sig would be 168 lines in 24lpb. There’s a way to work it out but in total honesty I’m too dumb xD It might be best to look up about time signatures in the renoise forums. They are really useful. But half the time as long as you’re working with the beat (in 24 lines this is any multiple of 24 so to speak) you can definitely do something. Also remember unique time signatures will often sound off or weird, but that’s the fun bit!

Awesome, thanks very much for the reply. That makes sense then, I guess I'm so used to working in 4/4 or 3/4 all the time! Recently I've been relearning my Akai S2000 and my Boss SP-505 so it made sense to return to Renoise as well (which is much more enjoyable to use!)@@arcadetrauma9663

where did you get your amen samples from?

There’s plenty of amen sample packs around if you just search a little. “Breakcore is not a good way to get laid” is a good starting point probably, and yes that’s really the name of the sample pack

but fun fact, if you are too lazy to have a bigger lpb and do everything manually, theres the retrigger command (R00), that although more limited, if all you wanna do is repeats ,its good enough.

Trueee, the way I learned o never really utilised Rxx commands, same goes for Sxx commands too! Both effect commands are useful. Though I will say the benefit of a higher lpb is also being able to do extra commands in between, like yea if all u want to do is repeat a note the Rxx command is fine, but there is also shit like using Cxx to cut the volume between notes to achieve a cool gate effect and stuff
