I made my first bucket hat!!! Tips for anyone about to start: 1) ****measure and cut accurately***, if you spend more time doing this from the beginning, you will not spend time suffering later when it doesn't line up. 2) Test the stitch tension on a scrap of fabric, because otherwise the rings around the bucket hat may get f'd up with a bunch of loops 3) On my next hat, I will def press the seams as I go as it would make everything look cleaner * These are basic sewing tips that maybe you know already, I was just SO excited to start that I was like "F the basics IM CUTTING"

I'll want to hand-embroider the front before I start sewing, so it'll be a while before I can report on my success of following the pattern, but I've already come up with a modification: I'll try to add some bias tape over the seam that sits against the skin. I hope I'll remember to update you on how it turns out!

such a great tutorial!!! question from a beginner beginner: i’m making a faux fur bucket hat - would i use medium or heavy weight interfacing? i know in your pattern you mentioned the heavier the fabric the strong id need the interfacing. TYSM!!! ❤

Faux fur can be pretty challenging to work with, quite the ambitious beginner project! You would want lighter interfacing for heavier fabric. The interfacing is just to help the brim hold its shape and structure.

Wow good video just discovered bucket patterns. Usually making quilt I noticed you sew a 1/4 inch seam most do 3/8. Do you find this easier for putting the circle part onto the main part tks for sharing fro Nova Scotia Canada

Thank you! I do find the smaller seam allowance makes it easier when sewing circles, but if you are comfortable with a wider seam allowance definitely feel free to add extra when cutting out the pattern pieces 🥰

Thank you! You just measure around the circumference of your head. Basically around the back of your head, above your ears, and across your forehead, which is roughly where the hat will sit.

It is called a sweatband! I don’t have an alteration video on how to add one, but you could easily sew one on to the bottom of the lining before adding that or you could omit the lining and just add a sweatband instead.

Hello! Thanks for the video. I had a question. You suggested a straight stitch or a serger for the beginning stitching on the side panel and brim peices. If my machine has an overlock stitch, would you recommend that over the straight stitch?

Yes! Overlock machines and sergers are basically the same thing so that would work perfectly :)

Hi! In your pdf pattern it says light to medium fusible interfacing but in your video you said medium to heavy interfacing? Is there one that is preferable? Maybe just medium since it's in the middle? Thank you!

Mostly depends on the fabric you use and personal preference. Heavy weight for lighter fabrics, medium for medium fabrics, and lightweight for heavy fabrics. Interfacing is also optional, but it does help keep the shape of the brim better.

You will need roughly 1/2-2/3 of a metre/yard depending on the length of the fabric, but I find most fabric shops will only give you fabric increments of 1/2, so to make it easier I recommend just getting a full metre/yard. I also love using thrifted suit jackets for these. Sometimes you can get some wild printed jackets for less than $5

I have a question. I downloaded your pattern and directions a couple years ago. I am trying to make a hat for a 25 inch head so I followed your directions and made the extra Large. However, after being very careful with 1/4 inch seam allowances and making the hat reversable like you show here, the inside diameter is only 24 inches. I am making for a friend in Hawaii and he cannot try on for fit. He is sure his head is 25 inches. So I guess I need to make the 2XL?

Yes sometimes adding that extra fabric can make the fit smaller. I would definitely size up if you are finding the fit small. Each size is an inch larger in diameter so the next size up should fit him :)

Adding more pins! As long as you are spacing the pins out evenly the pieces will line up without any folds or tucks. You can also try baste stitching the top panels to the side panels as well. :)

They are for ventilation. If you are wanting to add chin ties you would sew those in when you add the lining :)

You might have had your iron on too high of a setting. Fusible interfacing doesn’t take much heat to melt the glue :)

If you’re worried about making mistakes I recommend practicing on cheap fabrics. Sometimes you can get fabrics for $1 in the sale section at fabric stores. The more you sew, the better you’ll get!

Fabric plays a big part into how a pattern will turn out. Practicing with a simple quilter’s cotton and taking your time to cut out and pin each piece as accurately as you can will really go a long way. You can even try hand basting each piece before sewing with the machine. Unfortunately, patience and practice are the only ways to find success while sewing.
