I just leave the three rolls together and tie the ribbon thru the gap at each end before removing the paper rolls....seems a lot easier and looks okay

Could the end cards be attached to the paper before you roll it up?

Just leave the 3 tubes together. Back an end out, leaving about an inch gap. Twist and tie the ribbon. Then remove the tube. Repeat on the other side. Much quicker and also less wasteful.
