To those commenting that this soap has too many ingredients and that a good soap only needs good oils and lye/water. Remember this video was done to show us how to make our own melt and pour soap. A soap base that can be melted and molded has different properties than our homemade luxury bars. I started out using store bought melt and pour base where you may be limited on the oils they use and the price. Good to know I can make my own melt and pour base for my embeds now. Thank you for your time in making this awesome video!

I understand your point of view. Simply stated MP soap is never all natural. But PG is considered safe. I love all natural and prefer it. The soap I use is all natural and I make my own toothpaste, too. But I also love science and figuring things out. My MP bases are "more natural" than some counterparts. I share for the people who want this. I do not sell this kind of soap as part of my business but only as personal preference. I believe it is 100% safe. Do what suits you.

This is great! Read many of the comments and before people jump all over the safety of an ingredient, they should make sure the product they entered is the one you listed...I have found nothing to suggest any of these ingredients should not be used by way of research and have found them all for sale at Essential Wholesale and/or Bulk Apothecary. I don't usually comment on a video until I have tried it, but I do have to order most of the ingredients as I have only the ones I use in my lye soap on hand. Just had to remind people to do your own research on the products, just don't take someone else's word for it that something is or is not okay to use. I will be making this soon and I am very particular about what I put on or in my body...good for you for not using any GMO products as well!!!

I finally tried Bonnie's recipe last Sunday, March 4th 2018. Though I originally wanted to try it like last year in January. I bought all the supplies and was sorta worried on trying this. I finally did it! I don't measure right on the crockpot, so I had a separate bowl then dumped it in the Crockpot. The only thing that I was freaked out about was how clumpy it was when I added the lye. Make sure you are super slow in pouring the lye water little by little because it will dry (like clumpy detergent) out if you don't. I had to add water (maybe 1/2 cup) incorporated the ingredients a bit more. It all worked out and tested a tiny piece to verify that it remelts.

Clumping is what you want, that’s how you know the fatty acids are breaking down by the lye. Once you add the glycerin/alcohol mixture you quickly mix and you let it simmer. The alcohol will break at all down. I’m a soap maker that makes this base for resale as well

Someone asked about colorants and clarity and I cannot find the comment so I want to reply here. If you have a clear soap base and you desire a clear color, you must add a water soluble colorant such as FD&C dyes. Any other colorant will cause clouding. In the fish example at the end, I was focusing on showing the remelt property. I used a purple mica so that is why you can't see through the fish. However, mica colorants used in a clear soap base allow you to see the sparkle and shine of the colorant, though you can't see through a mica colored soap from clear base. Had I used a water soluble colorant instead you would be able to see through it. Hope that helps for those understanding why my fish at the end are not clear.

I'm not sure why you would want to make a duplicate of Ivory soap? It's so drying on skin and cheap so easier to just buy.. but Anyhow, if we look at the ingredients for IVORY we find the following: Sodium Tallowate (Soap made from rendered Cow's Fat) and/or Sodium Palmate (Soap made from Palm Oil). It would appear the bulk of Ivory is Beef Tallow and or Palm.. continuing on you have water, sodium cocoate (soap made from coconut oil) and / or sodium palm kernelate (soap made from palm kernel oil) sodium chloride (table salt), fragrance, coconut acid, palm acid, palm kernel acid, tallow acid, tetrasodium EDTA (chelating agent). I can tell you the reason this soap is so drying for the skin is that it is all the oils used to make it are saturated oils. None of these ingredients have anything to do with the floating properties though. For that you need to whip it. If you want floating soap, use any recipe and whip it good. The air bubbles make it float.

@WhiskeyHotel19699 жыл бұрын
+Good Earth Spa Large soap companies also make their soap a little differently than the typical made at home HP or CP soap. There is a lot more water used. The Sodium Chloride is used to drop the soap particles out of suspension and it sinks to the bottom. It actually makes a pretty pure product. This allows the company to harvest another product...glycerin. There is also very little fat left over in mass produced soap (fat floats so not desirable in this process). Using this process the extra air in ivory soap must be added when the soap is being worked and softened for the packaging process. Looks kinda like a giant play-doh fun factory! I used to work for a soap manufacturer, but not the one that makes Ivory. Many bar soaps these days are detergent based.

I saw some bases for sale on Ebay, but when i purchase them they are not nearly as clear as the pictures they show and it is always an excuse about a new distributor or something. It’s actually more of a detergent than the soap itself with many additives..

Remember that these 'chemicals' are not necessarily bad for you. Everything is a chemical of some sort and just making soap is chemistry in the purest form. That said, you can make glycerin soap (clear soap) using alcohol and sugar added to your lye soap. Although you end up creating some of these chemicals anyway. Google for recipes and chemical details.

Why Sorbitol instead of regular sugar water? Sorbitol is expensive! Thanks for the video; its a great resource!
@april40256 жыл бұрын
sorbitol (a sugar alcohol) is a different chemical from sucrose (table sugar), so sugar water would not be equivalent to sorbitol
@kelleyspartiatis53235 жыл бұрын
@@april4025 Yes it's different but sugar is a solvent which is the reason it's being used here too. Maybe the Sorbitol gives a more transparent effect?
@april40255 жыл бұрын
Sorbitol and sucrose have different properties- I think the most relevant here would be solubility in water. Sucrose is much less soluble in water than sorbitol, so it may have to do with the fact that when making soap you want as little excess water as possible- if you had equal amounts of sucrose and sorbitol, you'd need less water to dissolve the sorbitol
@kelleyspartiatis53235 жыл бұрын
@@april4025 if you made a syrup with the sugar you can get rid of a lot of water. Or if you used a detergent that was in powder form you can dissolve that in a lot less water than the amount it's in when you buy it. Only saying for the sake of possibilities. I use Sorbitol in a lot of my products and it's cheap enough.

It is a bit cheaper, especially when you factor in shipping. I like having a little MP around for playing soap with the kids and I'm too sensitive to use sulfates. There are multiple things lending to the clarity of the soap. This is like a half soap/half detergent bar. Some oils cause clouding moreso than others so I found it was easier to make it more clear by reducing the amount of soap to about half and making my soap part with isolated fatty acids and oils instead of only oils and replacing the other half with the mild detergent. It is still a little bit amber but very clear. Also the TEA helps with clarity, and the sorbitol.

Bonnie I love your videos!!! Thanks!!! I made you kit then improvised my own recipe from said kit ( A new Soaper). I have to say you are doing a great job showing us how to. When I decided to go into making my own soap, I watched a lot of videos. By far you and Soaping 101 and soap Queen have been big influences in my new soaping adventure. My friends love my soap and your recipe my first soap. Please do a video on wine soap. I have seen many and even watched your video on Beer soap. A this information pointing me in the right direction, no bad batches, YET. I know that will be inevitable. but thanks for all of your wealth of information. Blessings to you.

I have to say, this is amazing. This is the most thorough recipe I have seen. Where would you recommend I could get more information on the function of each of the ingredients?

Thank you for your comprehensive and immensely helpful tutorial GES! I'm curious about incorporating both liquid and powder extracts in my soap and was curious if you have any experience or advice in doing this as I'm afraid of diluting my soap too much to the point that it's not a solid bar anymore. The only non-risky way of doing this I can think of is substituting the water for extract liquids in the recipe; I was also wondering about mixing in some shea butter and/or bees wax. If anyone has any knowledge of this I would greatly appreciate advice, if not I'll do some experimenting and post the results here in a reply. Thanks!

I like your vid - very easy to follow. Only problem I had was determining when to put the insert back into the crockpot base! I didn't see anywhere that you mentioned this.

Actually when you think of poisonous anti-freeze, ethylene glycol is the culprit. Propylene glycol which also resists freezing has started to hit the market because it is safe and non-toxic alternative. You'll also find this in many household items including toothpaste. We use it because of it's properties that change the melting point. Just because it has a similar property as something else that is poisonous doesn't mean PG is, too. But, you could also use ethanol which also has same property.

Melt and pour soap is so smooth and easy to pour and Hot Process is so chunky and lumpy. I would love to find a hybrid of the two that is simply easy to pour. Start with a Hot Process recipe and just add (alcohol, propylene glygol, glycerine, sugar water) and keep cooking until pouring time. This would be easier for molds, but still allow for additives to be added at the very end that will not interact with the lye (like set aside oil for superfatting, fragrance oils, essential oils).

Consider putting your molds on a cookie sheet before transporting them about. The silicone can shift when moving, burn you. Also, those old Wilton-like spatulas, have issues with build-up of grime between the handle and the silicone. Sometimes its hard to see. I tossed mine out.

Hi Bonnie! Thanks for sharing your recipe. I'd like to try it but with shea or cocoa butter. I have lauric acid to substitute with the myristic. Since coconut is rich in lauric acid, can I use the same measurement for coconut and substitute with either shea or cocoa butter? Or will that affect the values for the lye solution? I'm not really after the clarity of the final bar, so I don't mind if the mixture turns cloudy... Can I also drop the TEA? Cheers! Thank you!!!

I Really love this video. Thanks. I saved it 4 years ago. But just watched today. Please is this soap for bathing? If I decide to add other ingredients like honey or sheabutter will it ulter the production?
@GoodEarthSpa4 жыл бұрын
You could add a small amount of shea butter to the final product when you remelt it. However, changing any oil or butter by a large quantity would change other ingredients. You can also lose clarity when adding other oils or butters, so keep that in mind.

Hey Bonnie... Thanks soo much for the recipe... I tried it out and it really works well.. Only had two things I wanted your suggestions on.. 1 The lather isn't all that great, it's lesser than the ready bases I get in India. Can I add something to make it better? 2 The soap gets finished really really fast, almost twice as fast as the general melt and pour I make.. Your suggestions and advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
