How to Make Coconut Oil (Easy)

Pure coconut oil can be relatively cheap to buy which makes it not worth the hassle of making your own coconut oil. This is mainly because of the amount of processing needed to do it. Factory machines that extract the oil keep the production costs low but if you want to try making your own coconut oil let us show you how to do it the easy way with step by step instructions.
For our tutorial we use 1 coconut. The first thing to do is to remove the coconut water and then extract the coconut meat from the shell. Next rinse the coconut meat and cut it into small cubes to help your blender. Then you will want to boil some water, let it cool slightly to warm then add it to your blender with the coconut meat and grind. Once grinded pour the mixture into a sieve to separate the coconut milk from the coconut meat. Press the coconut meat with your hands to squeeze out every drop of coconut milk. After that you will want to repeat the same process again to get more milk.
ESSENTIAL TIP: Dont throw the ground coconut meat away as it can be added to blended dates to make your own energy bars.
Put the coconut milk in the fridge overnight and in the morning you will see that the coconut oil and the coconut milk has separated. Place the white part into a saucepan (this will be for the coconut oil). You can strain the other liquid a final time to extract every bit of coconut oil and then you can use the liquid in your cooking. It is great for making a West African rice dish called Jollof rice.
If you don't want to use the coconut water straight away you can put it into a container and freeze it. Cook the coconut oil over a medium heat for around 1 hour until its slightly burnt. If it smokes at any point simply reduce the heat to low. Let it cool down and then sieve it through a cheese cloth, nut milk bag or through kitchen roll into a sterilised container and there you have it. Homemade coconut oil. It is best kept in the fridge and will keep for up to 2 years.

@@CarvedCulture We made a lot of coconut oil so we didn't do it in a blender. It was grated by hand on a huge grater and neither did we put it in the fridge. It was covered and left overnight in a very large container. The next morning we scooped out the coconut cream at the top and boiled it to make the oil. We grew our own coconuts! Btw, I'm now 66 years old and still making my coconut oil; 56 years of experience!
