Thank You Bonnie for this clear instruction for CPOP process. I had always been concerned about this method and either did CP or HP. I shall be more vigilant in future. Thank You again

Beautiful soap! I am new to soap making and have enjoyed watching your videos. I made an apple scented soap with a very small amount of heavy cream. I covered the soap with the lid wrapped in towels and placed it in the oven. I did not turn on the oven but used the oven light and let the soap sit overnight. I think it came out pretty good. I watched your Frankincense and Myrrh video - I loved it and will try it later this year. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

Bonnie, hurray, I finally got my soap to gel! I used your recipe, but halved it as I have only one of the cool molds like you use. The other is a tall and skinny and I wanted to test with the one mold rather than two molds of different dimensions. I have a gas oven, and so, I think I need to do ten minutes first, then turn the oven off, as after two ten minutes sessions with the oven off my soap wasn't gelling. So I turned it back on for five minutes and voila! I'm so excited. I used canola instead of pomace as I didn't have pomace and didn't want greenish soap. So, my soap is a pale yellow which I love...so we'll see how the next ten minutes go! Thanks for the awesome video. This is going to make a huge difference in my start up business as it is very humid here this year, and my soap is taking forever to cure.

Kim K, thanks for your post... you answered my question above (if only I had seen your post prior to posting it!), as to whether I could cut the recipe in half! Seems like it's okay to do so, based on your post. My first full batch was with EVOO and it turned out too green, which I tried to change by adding mica colorant and I ended up using everything I had to make a purple & pink (two sep color batches) and did not get the color I was after (a bit muddy, not as bright). I will now half the recipe and use the canola oil to experiment. I also messed up on not waiting for the temperature to be low enough (about 80-100 degrees Fahrenheit, I think) to add my scent and I didn't get that fragrant of a soap. Live and learn, I guess!... Will keep trying!! :)

this is an awesome tutorial! HOWEVER, I have learned that the ph strips are more often than not, always a point different than what it shows. The zap test they say is more accurate. I refuse to put it on my tongue....lol i just test a piece out on myself and if i start getting red, itchy and burn feeling then i know its a throw away or rebatch :)
@Turtletoots34 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there is no way to have a pH of 7 in natural soap. It's more like a 9/10. pH strips are just not very accurate when it comes to testing soap and unfortunately a lot of people who don't realise this may be led to believe that their soap is pH neutral when that is far from the truth. Even worse is when people imply citric acid can lower the pH of soap which is also not true.

I recommend a minimum of curing the soap until it is a PH between 8 - 10. That is when it is safe to use on skin. While this usually occurs at about 48 hours old, I always recommend additional cure time to allow the moisture to come out, resulting in a higher quality bar. I don't package soap until all the moisture weight has come out. I weigh the bars and package them after they lost the appropriate weight which can take 2 weeks or several months depending on water content/discount used.

I really love your videos it always just makes me uncomfortable when you recommend such a short cure time. Ive tried literally everything, i cut one of my bars into 8 small pieces so i can try them on a weekly basis, to take notes, and they're never as good at 2 weeks as they are at 6-8 weeks. But i think a lot of that has to do with preference. I just noticed that no matter what the bar or the process used to make them they always bubble up dramatically more between the 6th and 8th week.

No, soap requires lye. However, there is no lye remaining in the soap. The lye and oils change chemically when you make the soap in a chemical reaction and they form soap and glycerin. Soap is safe to use. If you are concerned about handling lye, then you can start with Melt and Pour soap which has previously been made with lye.

@GoodEarthSpa11 жыл бұрын
But that being said, my 2 week old soaps that I use never dry my skin. Maybe that depends on what ingredients you are using and the percent of superfat that you use. Also too many hard oils can cause a more drying soap such as too much coconut or palm oil in the soap formula.

Thank you for the great and helpful tutorial. I must say though, pH strips and this way of measuring pH in soap is not very accurate. There is no way your soap is 7.5. Natural soap is pH9-10. This misinformation often leads new soapmakers to think that their soap is pH neutral and that's just not right,

+Melissa RMT Yes! Google is a calculator so you can for example google "9oz to grams" and easily make all your calculations.
@melissarmt73309 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I wasn't sure if the conversion was for fluid ounces, which is volume or the standard ounce, which is weight. Many recipes use "ounces" to measure both oils and additives like kaolin clay and that gets confusing. Grams should be the standard.

@Chemeleon159 жыл бұрын
the natural sugars in the milk will darken the soap(from creamy, to gold/orange, and then brown) so keep an eye on it. Do not forget to turn the oven off at the right time and let it stay warm in the oven. If you looking for a specific color or trying to prevent it from going too dark, open the oven door to reduce temp when oven is off.

My channel is geared toward new soapers, not professional soap-makers. I'm assuming that people making my recipes are making them for home use, not commercial. Just to be clear, when I advise on what is safe, that does not mean that you should package and sell soaps that are 2 weeks old. My soaps are not packaged until usually a month or longer. I do not package until the bars have lost all their moisture content, which I calculate by weighing the soap before and after cure and sub water weight.
@GoodEarthSpa11 жыл бұрын
All soap requires some form of lye (K or Na). No exceptions. Pre-made soap base was also made with lye at one point. The very definition of soap requires lye. It would not be soap without lye. No lye remains in soap. If your olive oil soap did not have lye added to it, it would be olive oil, not soap. Does this answer your question? There is also in in depth chemical response I could make but most people who ask this question don't seem to be aware of the chemistry of soap-making.
@GoodEarthSpa11 жыл бұрын
No, in this soap I did not need to turn on the heat but you may need to. It depends on the soap temps and your oven. Just watch for gel phase. If it's taking a long time to gel, you may need more heat.
@GoodEarthSpa11 жыл бұрын
If you force it through gel with the oven or force it to gel by insulating you pretty much get the same result. If you make the same soap and gel one and ungel the other, PH test the the very next day and you'll likely find the gelled soap is much milder, in my experience usually by a few or several points on the PH scale. The ungelled will usually zap at 24 hours old while the gelled soap will not. It makes it mild like HP but you still need cure time for moisture content.
@GoodEarthSpa11 жыл бұрын
Yes, you want to watch carefully if using low flashpoint essential oils. With fragrances, it seems to stick even better using CPOP. That being said, I have even CPOP'd orange essential oil (very low FP) and I can still smell it. When you reach that flashpoint your eos will start vaporizing but that doesn't necessarily mean that ALL of it will escape. If you are doing low FP eos in CPOP, use a little extra EO to account for losing some.
