another great video, just found the channel and have been watching a lot of your videos. i have been aware for years about nettle and comfrey tea as fertiliser, but the pipe is a ne one on me, so my question is? would the pipe work with nettle too is are the leaves too dry?
@trevorhoward76822 жыл бұрын
When I had an allotment plot I planted quite a few comfrey plants along one plot boundary. This was for myself and plot neighbour to use as and when. It didn't run riot as it was a variety named "Bocking 14". It being sterile and not prone to root creep makes it ideal for us gardeners. I used chopped leaves in my potato trenches and shredded loads of it into small barrels to decompose, both aerobically and anaerobically. Brilliant stuff. Just a tiny garden now so only a couple of plants.
@trevorhoward76822 жыл бұрын
I posted the above before I'd watched all of the video. Sorry. That pipe idea seems brilliant. The small number of plants I have might just be enough to use in this way. Thanks.

To make my comfrey liquid I use a small rain butt with a tap and a tight fitting lid to keep the insects out. It holds an amazing amount of fresh comfrey. As the comfrey disintegrates, it turns into a rich brown liquid which can be drawn off via the tap. It is quite a lot stronger than comfrey tea made in a bucket with water. For seedlings and young vegetables, I usually add a cup of comfrey liquid to a full watering can. As the plants grow bigger I add two cups of comfrey.
@Nimbleful2 жыл бұрын
how do you prevent the comfrey sludge / leaves etc from clogging the tap?
@peace4peaceful3 ай бұрын
I do the same/similar. I use a 30ltr carbouy made for homebrewing. It has a tap about an inch up from the bottom. You can fit mesh or even use a sludge cap ( sediment reducer) inside to hold leaves back. You can buy a cheap air lock to remove odour. Or stick a piece of carbon filter inside to stop smells coming from the tub. Easy peasy 😊 I add a bit of molasses to help break it down.
@ohio_gardener2 жыл бұрын
I have a 5 gallon food grade bucket with a spigot on the bottom to make Comfrey Tea. I put a mesh screen on the bottom of the bucket with it bent up over the spigot, then fill the bucket with Comfrey leaves and water to brew. Periodically I take 3 cups of the liquid out of the spigot to add to the watering to fertilize the vegetables. I can add more water to the bucket and keep the tea brewing for some time.

2 years after the above comment was posted, but in case anyone has just come across it, like me, here’s a warning. It has been scientifically confirmed that comfrey is dangerous if ingested. “ it has toxic substances called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that damage the liver and can lead to death. Comfrey is no longer sold in the U.S., except in creams or ointments. The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Germany also have banned the sale of oral products containing comfrey.”

I make comfrey fertiliser in a watering can by packing in the leaves and adding water, so that I can pour a measured amount into another watering can before adding water. I was glad to learn the percentage - 10 units water to 1 unit comfrey. It smell terrible but it's great to get free , organic fertiliser for so little trouble. I thought your presentation was excellent - relaxed and informative.

My comfrey pipe is inside the greenhouse. I think the extra warmth may speed up the decomposition of the leaves, though I have occasionally had to add a sprinkling of water to encourage it. The chap who introduced me to the system called it a space ship, so that is how I always refer to it! I have always tried to allow flowering, but remove the old flowers before they seed, as it was in situ before I got the plot and I doubt it is sterile.
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Thats a very smart move Pam. I dont keep it inside only because it can smell and in warmer weather can attract fruit flies. outside you wont even notice them.

Like your site. Unfortunately I don't have the infertile variety and mine has taken over an area of my garden. The only way I can contain it sort of is to cut it to the ground @3 times a season so that it doesn't go to seed. I attempted composting it in black plastic bags but that very wasn't successful so since I am building real bins from pallets, plan to use it as green compost there. I plan to chop it up or at least cut into sections to help it break down faster. I am hoping that since you say the plant is rich in nutrients leading you to use it for tea, it will break down into the same components? Do you have any advice or comments re this idea?

I had the pipe here mate, the rubber reducer was £7.49 which had the jubilee clips on it, the plastic plant pot was 95p and the cap was also £6.50 so the whole pipe cost me about £15 there are cheaper alternatives though, the cap could be just a plain cap at around £3 and a plastic reducer would have been about £3 too hope that helps

@simplifygardening3 жыл бұрын
It takes around 4 to 6 weeks for it to steep in water. possibly set up a tank where you don't use water fill with leaves and weigh down and collect the resulting juice just like the comfrey pipe. This is more concentrated and you can keep adding leaves to that all year long

That's really neat. I don't think id ever heard of comfrey before. Now I have another plant to put along the house. I recently started up a vermicomposter, and will be building a Black Soldier Fly compost bin this weekend. With the comfrey, is it better to let the leaves break down by themselves, or will using red wigglers/other compost worms, aid in the release of the beneficial "tea" more quickly?
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Comfrey can be added to the compost or like i showed they worms wont break it down as it has sharp hairs they don't like. either add to compost of make feed as shown
@aaronblount39996 жыл бұрын
Thanks, like I stated, I'd never heard of comfrey before this video. I really like that pipe idea and am most likely going to build one once I start growing comfrey... My wife is going to be laughing at all my composting stations around the yard. I've started looking into the possibility of utilizing superworms (Zophobas morio) larvae to break down styrofoam rubbish into usable feed for my red wigglers to break down further into usable compost. It will be quite an interesting experiment once I start it up.

Love the pipe idea! One question, with the bucket method you said mix 10:1 with water, when using the more concentrated feed out of the pipe what is the correct ratio mix with water?
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
That would be more like 25/1 Graham it comes out of there like black treacle and is very concentrated

Thanks for the video buddy. The pipe method is so much better than the smelly bucket! Can the process the simplified and sped up by using a juicer? Or does the juicing process destroy some of the nutrient that your drainpipe method would preserve? TIA.
@simplifygardening3 жыл бұрын
It coverts the phosphorus and potassium into other compounds not required, better to rip and then wait.

@@simplifygardening Thx for the quick reply! Have you tried the same setup with nettle to get some high nitrogen fertilizer? It seems nettle could take a much longer time to breakdown without water.
@jimmys60ny6 жыл бұрын
Rhubarb has exactly the same effect. Plus side is you can also eat it. ( Truth is docks have deeper roots than comfrey and so probably bring up more minerals than comfrey, nettle tea is a whizz also.) My bible is a book by Lawrence D. Hills who was Directory of the Henry Doubled society which researched chemical free gardening. He lived in Bocking.

Graham, Never even thought about it. Would be high in nitrogen and would be good for leaf growth, how high im not sure, be careful you don't burn your plants with it. SOmething worth looking into though

I’m wondering if you can also use comfrey tea for indoor plants....would be so grateful for any info. Love your videos, thanks.
@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
Tom yes you could but if your talking about your house I wouldnt It does smell when applied, I would stick to a tomato feed indoors

UK Here We Grow . Thanks for your reply.. I’m stingy and baby bio etc costs a lot when you have house plants in every room, so I wouldn’t really mind if there was a smell. So could I give a weak watering to plants like succulents and palms , prayer plants etc.,? Thanks for taking your time to reply so quickly....
@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
@@TomTom-df9ph Yes its a perfect feed to use just make it light and the smell should dissipate relatively quickly

UK Here We Grow thank you so much. This will save a fair amount of cash. I got a root of comfrey from the side of a stream and grew it in a huge thick plastic like barrel . It soon multiplied I’m pleased to say. Thanks again....

@@TomTom-df9ph Be careful with that tom Comfrey can be invasive, dont let that one flower and set seed. To not have to worry about it try and get a variety called bocking 14 this is sterile and can only be propagated by root division

So do I add water to get the leaves fermenting? and how will i know when the leaves are finished? i guess they are flushed through before starting again? or just topped up with more leaves?? Thanks interesting video I'll give it a try when I'm certain of what I'm doing
@v.j.l.40732 жыл бұрын
Comfrey leaves completely disintegrate in the process as they are mostly water anyway.
@harrrytoool13914 жыл бұрын
Music was too cheesy mate but some good tips there. Comfrey is great to plant in different parts of the garden whether it becomes a weed or not as you simply chop and drop. Great mulch and the worms just pull it down at night. Best to put it in the compost bins though as mulching with leaves on soil encourages slugs and snails.

I have lots of comfrey plants but up u ntil now have only been using it as a chop a nd drop. I like the idea of comfrey tea and thing I will try to set that up this weekend. How long do you let it sit in the bucket with water? I am assuming that you then strain it out into another bucket. What ratio of cmfrey juice to water do you use?
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cathie, it takes about 6 weeks in the bucket and a little longer in the pipe as there is no water in the pipe to help it rot down, its all done by the weight of the bottle and compression. tea from bucket 10/1 and tea from pipe 25/1
