How I make comic panels in Clip Studio Paint!
Note: You CAN continue to use the panels in the folder as they're created, but I personally prefer them just being just lines and not having anything fancy. YMMV!

That was a godsend lol. My dumbass kept making individual panels and banging my head against the desk to keep that spacing consistent. I guess I’m just stupid lmao. Also that rasterize option is super useful. If I could like this twice I would. Thanks a whole lot.

How do you plan out your borders do you draw the images first then make a border that best fits them? Or do you draw the borders first and then draw within the borders.
@emstink
@emstink Жыл бұрын
I think usually, these are storyboarded out first, so they have an idea of what they want in the scene to begin with. It's like in a directing a camera for a movie, where they'll say "Focus in Bob walking from stage left to right. Zoom on Bob's face. Zoom out on landscape. Focus on Bob and Samantha looking at each other". You'll have a general idea of how big that needs to be. So you plan out the borders based on that general idea, and sketch in how you want the scenes to look. If something doesn't fit, this is the time you can rearrange, make a box bigger to show more, move something to the left, etc. This sketch usually overlaps the boxes to some degree (e.g in this video you can see the face zoom in on the top right has some hair cut off. That hair would likely be present in the sketch phase) Once you're happy with the sketch, you usually stay relatively within the lines. There's no point drawing too far off the lines, it's a waste of time, but also it's sometimes necessary to allow flow or blending. After you're finished, you can erase those overlaps.

Very helpful. The biggest issue I've ever had though is that I just never ever know how to lay out my comics. I mean it doesn't matter that much, since I don't draw anymore, but, still. It's something I was never able to understand.

So I can make squares. I wanna know how to make them. Like how do you decide to frame a panel? How do you make them appealing visually but having them intersect and overlap? How do you know when to do what for a scene? Do you just wing it?

Me who uses krita: well, when we tap on the comic template, it gives us the boxes all ready for us along with the layers. One layer let's you crop the boxes. I use them at times, though not a whole lot.

Alright but how do you plan the panel layouts?
@emstink
@emstink Жыл бұрын
Sketch. What is happening in your scene? E.g Alice and Maria just broke up on a park bench in the previous panel. In the next panel, you want to show Maria storming away while Alice is left on the bench, crying. First, you might want a wide frame showing Maria getting off the bench, Alice's distraught face peeking through behind her. The second frame is narrower, Maria's boots crushing grass and rippling the lake beside her. Third on a new row is narrow again, showing a close up of Alice's distraught face. Fourth on the same row, wider again is a zoom out showing Alice on a bench frame showing a close up of her sad face. The fifth, six, and seventh frame are split on the same row. 4 shows Maria's silhouette walking away, over the shoulder of Alice, 5 shows Alice's clenched fists in her skirt, 6 shows her head bent as she cries. If you know what's happening in your scene, it's a lot easier to plan the panels. And also, sketch them, see how they fit, move things around. For example, if I'd sketched the above, I might decide that instead of having 7 frames, I can merge 5 and 6 by moving the rest of the frames over to the left and having 5 and 6 be a tall continuous frame showing Alice's bent head in the first row, tears dripping onto her fists in the second row. Generally, showing a setting or a landscape like a field or a room will have a wide frame, or even a big square frame that would take up 4 smaller frames. If you want to highlight things in the room/area, or a conversation taking place inside it, you can overlap smaller frames on the bigger one. Also, if you want to give a feel of loneliness or emptiness to a frame, you can zoom out more and thus may need a larger frame, like a zoom-out of a schoolboy with no friends on his own in a classroom, or two enemies on opposite sides of the frame glaring at each other with nothing in between. Close-ups on faces or objects are usually smaller because you want the expression/details to be the sole focus of the frame. Unless it's meant to be a really impactful expression, then consider making the frame bigger. Closer frames are also useful for making things feel more cozy - although if you make the frame too cramped, it can start to feel claustrophobic which is good for horror. In that cases, it might be better to utilise even smaller frames more often to give the feeling of unease. Long frames are better for things that have stayed the same through the rows (or long things, obviously, like full-body shots). E.g 3 friends might be in a treasure cave, 2 of them are arguing in the background while one of them looks down at a piece of cursed treasure in his hands. You could have 1 long frame on the left of him standing over the treasure, while 3 frames to the right are arguing until finally, they look over and notice. If you can study when and _how_ different frames are used, it becomes a lot easier to plan the panels. Plain straight frames can get boring really quickly, so it's best to just play around and practice while keeping some basic patterns in mind. Storyboard, sketch the scenes and adapt the frames around them to fit better. I know I'm not the original creator and I'm sorry it's a lot, but I hope this might help someone
