How to make DIY Ollas: Self-Watering Systems for Plants

Two simple ways to make your own ollas. These traditional self-watering vessels are low-tech, easy to DIY, and will help keep plants watered in the driest conditions. The way it works is that you bury the pots into the ground near plants that need regular watering. Top up the water in the vessel rather than the soil around the plant. Moisture seeps through the terracotta, and eventually, the plant's roots will grow right up to the pot. They'll suck moisture directly from it.
The first way to make an Olla takes only a few minutes, and the second more permanent DIY takes a day. You can also use a cork to fill the hole, as you can see in my olla update video for using these self-watering pots outside in the garden: • Ollas for Healthy Seed...

With masonry, it's good to wet down the surface where new mortar is applied, so that moisture doesn't wick out of curing cement too quickly. That can reduce the finished seal and durability of the cement. So perhaps a good additional step...to wet down the Terra-Cotta pots before adding the cement. ....another great video!

I found you in an interesting way, and I’m happy I did! I do the NYT crossword puzzle (app) and a clue was “ollas” so I googled it. I thought it was a cooking pot. When I saw that it’s also something used for watering gardens, I had to check that out, being a gardener. Google had a lot listed, including your video. So I watched it. And I’m so glad I did! I had heard of ollas, not knowing what they were called (or how to pronounce it) and really never knew how they worked. I now realize that ollas let water seep out, and the plant roots grow toward the pot to use the water. It makes sense. I don’t use terra cotta pots for container gardening for this very reason. The unglazed pots let the water seep out of the soil, and the plants in them need to be watered more often. So I learned so much from your video and reading all 579 of the comments! (You have such nice, informative comments. I read them all, since I wasn’t sleeping anyway!) To conclude my “book,” I want to thank you for this great DIY method to help water your garden, which importantly saves water! I am a new subscriber and will watch your follow-up videos. Now back to my crossword puzzle!

I did like this video. Been thinking of my own solution since i saw one of the retail, autofilling sets that cost an arm and a leg. Naturally, my solution was massively overcomplicated and quite flawed. This video brought Me back down to earth and will be doing permanent ollas via your method in the next few weeks. I may still try to add a simpler version of my design auto-filling system as I have a 50 US gallon rainwater butt right next to the greenhouse. Thanks!

I have a system of these connected by tubing to water containers for my garden here in the south of Spain. The system works really well, all I have to do is open a tap for a couple of minutes per day to top up the ollas and, of course, refill the water containers. Saves me a load of work and keeps weeds to a minimum, both of which I really appreciate as I have a chest problem.

Hi Carl Im a Kiwi and live in Australia but my wife is from Almeria in the south of Spain. When I visited there I was amazed as we flew in to the airport seeing all the commercial growing houses. So where you live must be a great place to grow things. The climate is very similar to south Queensland where I live here. These Ollas look like a great idea. All the best, kind regards Paul.

Hi Lovely greens. Today I just learned about olla's. I live on the Gold Coast of Australia where it is both very hot and my water rates bill is more than my electricity bill so water conservation is paramount. Anyway like you after a little online pricing of ollas which I would need a lot of, I also thought, I wonder if the terracotta pot idea would work. Then I saw that you have done it already and so this was very helpful thank you. We can buy these for just a few dollars and maybe the same for the tray from our local mega garden and hardware store. Thanks again. I hope you holiday went well. Kind regards Paul. happy gardening.

Kind of what we do when we plant trees. Next to the hole for the tree we make a narrow hole for the PVC pipe that will go down about 3 ft. It’s perforated so water will leach out when we fill it. It forces the roots down and saves water. Instead of watering shallow for many minutes it goes straight down. Pipe is level with soil so you can mow or weed whack over it. Never lost a tree. I’m going to use your idea for veg or flowers. Thanks.

If anybody is concerned that the material used to seal the hole in the bottom of the pot is toxic, they sell food grade silicone caulking and the aquarium supply sells sealants that you can use like caulking and is non-toxic. They use that to make aquariums.

Sweetearth1958 sand in bottom without covering the hole with anything else will work a bit better for water loving plants, even good for most plants. Old timers would bury a jug with holes punched in it, they also used coffee cans but that was when toxicity wasn’t as much of a concern. 😁

Daniel D Sizemore growing up we planted milk jugs in between the tomatoes with just 1 hole on each side at close to bottom of plants. Encourages plant roots to grow waaaaaayyyy down. Great idea. I would not use the cement being that it's alkaline, but the putty or a cork as someone mention would be better. Note, if you live in an area where the ground freezes, you need to pull it out so it doesn't crack and you can use it again the next year. I have some pots that I am not using for anything and not even remotely want to spend hundred on ollas, I will try that, especially with my grapes and berries that are not too close to hoses.

Phil Morton - I live in the south of Spain and we get it very hot in summer, up to 45 degrees. I've used ollas for about 7 years. Mine are connected with tubing to a central reservoir with a tap. All I need to do is turn a tap on for a couple of minutes and refill the reservoirs. This works really well for peas, squashes, pumpkins, courgettes, you name it. You might want to varnish any part of the olla that is above ground to prevent evaporation, although here the sun destroys the varnish due to intense ultraviolet. Try Googling "ollas Mexico" and then look for the Permaculture Research Institute article. Try it - it's a truly wonderful system that has been in use for many thousands of years all over the world. Get back to me if you need more advice.

My concern is with the second - permanent - solution's use of cement, which is an alkaline substance that can raise the soil-Ph around the olla, interfering with nutrient-uptake in acidity-thriving plants, which include many vegetables. I'm still thinking about alternatives, since where I live has generally alkaline soil.

You can also fill a bottle from 5 gallons to as small as a quart - depending on the size of the top of your clay pot and how much ) and fill it with water and place it upside down covering the top of the pot as you would a water dispenser. This will allow you to go on vacation for a longer period of time. It is a little unsightly though but it works for extebded vacations to keep your plants watered. The nice thing is you can see when the water level is low and repeater accordingly. I usually top the bottle with the clay pot cover and/or stones to keep the bottle from blowing away in the wind once it gets empty. The only downside is that it can be a bit unsightly.

In Texas summer heat the water would be boiling.

@@grlnexdoorable Yes, the water in the bottle will get warm in hot weather but it will cool down as it passes through the pot...and the earth below the surface will also help keep the water cool below the surface. This is how dirt under ground stays cool even in the hottest weather.

@@grlnexdoorable what about covering the water bottle with a silver emergency blanket to reflect the heat so that the water inside the bottle doesn't get so hot?

@@PypamidI think growing moss in the top is a great idea!!! ...bc it will blend into the garden landscape and there are some really awesome looking mosses out there!! Downside: Water may flood container & drown moss. To aid drainage, one could ANGLE container or drill ...SLOWLY, perhaps adding water to soften clay container to PREVENT it from cracking!!! Another idea: Leave water in the top for frogs n toads that eat garden pests(change water occasionally tho to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.)!!!
