you can put the yellow ruler on top of the strip-- place the 30 inch mark on one short edge and then cut off the other end-- we quilters do this all the time

Thank you so so much for this video. I've worked almost exclusively in veg tan so this tutorial is very helpful. I would like to say that instead of contact to bond your right side to right side seam excess while stitching, you can also just staple them together for stability. Eradicates the need for mini clips and possibly waiting for contact drying times. The holes won't be seen, the staples are easier to place and are easy enough to remove. obviously only when stitching ends together that have internal seam excess. Splitting the seams in order to spread the bulk can also be hammered down before topstitching. Contact is great at this moment because it makes for a cleaner finish but I know that a lot of needles can easily become gummed up and disrupt tensions. This is a nice video and a great technique for vinyl applications. I just can’t see it being a preferred method for a high quality leather good. For chrome leather bag strap I would opt for edge coat (something like Giardini base coat) application, paint, and top coat. I know edge painting is time consuming but it’s also why high quality leather goods are so long wearing. Folded over edges like piping will become wear spots. It’s just that when I see this fold over treatment it screams a vinyl or PU leather good to me which is fine if that is the material you’re working with. As far as leather apps go, a fold over edge treatment may be acceptable in garment applications like a light leather coat sash. In the end it all depends on your price point. IMO I would opt for using edge coat and price accordingly.

I'm not a proffessionel in any way , but I built myself a guitar bag where I built a handle for it. I simply cut 2 IDENTICAL strips of thick paper ($0.33 from Walmart for whole sheet) and 2 strips of leather (little wider than the paper strip). I glued the paper strip in the middle of the leather strip and bent both side around the paper. Guided by the edge of the thick paper, I got a perfect straight line of the band on both side. Once glued, I proceeded with sewing. I'm not sure if that's the correct way though

I finally gave these double straps a go. I don't know what happened with my measurements, but the both seams were not were they should be. I had one seam on the top of one side and the other on the bottom of the other side :) I wanted finished length of 24 1/2, so I made one strap 25 inches and the other 26 1/2! I think my math is off somewhere.....

Just found your channel a few days ago and really appreciate your videos. This technique makes for an elegant looking strap that feels good which is pretty high on my list since I dislike clunky on any part of my bags ... but that can get challenging to avoid it. Do you ever put a stabilizer in this kind of strap? Some bags get loaded up and have to support a fair amount of weight. Keep up the good work Garth! I like your videos 'Real and Unfiltered'.

Thank you for watching our videos! I don’t use stabilizers in the straps and there’s already a lot of material and strength built in. No the connectors are a different story. I like to use a very thin nlylon that is glued in to provide the heavy lifting. 👍

You can skive by hand. Search for skiving knives. I’d recommend Rocky Mountain Leather. 👍

It’s a high solids glue from Korea. However, if you buy some weld wood from any hardware store, that’ll work just as well. The trick is, to let it air out and thicken up a bit. Just leave the lid off of the bottle for a day or so.

Hello, I am new to your channel. I am also a newbie to sewing with leather. I plan on making a cotton/leather messenger bag. I don’t have a skiving machine, or a Kiki machine which I see a lot of people using. I have a Bernina 770 machine. I saw it sew leather 1/4” thick. Can I use this machine for the bag, and could you recommend any techniques to skive down the straps without use of your amazing machine? ☺️😄

Hi Carol! My Juki is actually the 1508 - Very similar looking to your 1541. To save time, I typically will use both machines with different color thread in each. I try to match the construction thread as close as possible to the bag (or at least a dark color) to mitigate the chances of a glaring white thread from showing.
