Take your used elderberries put them in a clean jar and add apple cider vinegar. Cover with a piece of cloth (cheese cloth or something similar) Let it sit for 4-6 weeks keep and topping off the vinegar if it evaporates, making sure the berries are covered. You have a homemade elderberry vinegar.

I have been doing syrup for a long time.. Learned Herbalism, it helps :). Now i do it with 1/2 of water decoction, 1/4 honey and 1/4 of alcohol. It has a much longer shelf life and if you don’t like the alcohol taste, you can just add your TBSP to a bit of juice. That method is the one learned in many Herbalism Schools. To a longer shelf life, you go up to 1/3 alcohol portion with a 100% grain alcohol. The idea is not to take too much of this syrup anyway .. And depending what you add in it (with the elderberries) , better having it in the morning. Too much Vit C might keep you awake ! :) You can do the syrup, and while steeping you can add the more fragile herbs like flowers or leaves - they will be in the infusion stage. ( mullein, plantain, thyme ..) depending what kind of syrup you want to have. If you have specific cold-flu symptoms each year, like a lot of damp or not able to cough.. choose the herbs that are ‘expectorant’. You will have a customized syrup ... You can also make one for the beginning of the season - fall and then another one for winter so with more warming herbs if you have tendency to feel cold, and moving through spring with more carminative herbs to help moving the winter toxins out with this Yang season showing up and helping the Liver to do its cleansing process. Cardamom, Fennel, Cumin seeds, Coriander seeds, Cinnamon, Ginger, etc. are great at this time. You want to move the blood. To expel the toxins out :) As per as in fall, you want to use more astringent herbs, to keep the energy in, not to let it out (as too much ginger at that time of year will open the pores and makes you sweat too much ). Loosing to much Jin Ye ( Organic liquid) is not good. Winter, being Kidney’s energy, you want to comfort the body with nice minerals and nourishing herbs .. add them in your syrup. Enjoy the Syrup Seasons ...

I learned from and article in the Franklin Institute of Wellness site that elderberry should be brought to boil uncovered at medium. That this shouldn’t be shortened as it is crucial for removing the cyanide-like toxin in the seeds. Then at a simmer for 30-45 minutes. It’s the only site that has mentioned this. Was wondering if anyone else was aware of this?
@mountainroseherbs5 жыл бұрын
Hello Griselle and thanks for your question! We do issue a warning on the product page for our elderberries that states: "The raw fruit contains a component sambunigrin which may cause vomiting and severe diarrhea if ingested." So this warning does specifically pertain to fresh, raw elderberries. We don't give any specific cooking times being as elderberries differ from region to region, but a boil is certainly recommended. Please see the product page for any more information, and like always, we are happy to answer questions as best as we can! www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/elder-berries/profile

Boiling the dried berries is typically proficient at removing any traces of toxins, if any, that remain after drying. You can leave the lid off for several minutes at a boil, and then return the lid to continue the process.

Personally I make my Elderbery Syrup differently. Here is my version and add ons (Adult recipe) for anyone interested: • 200g Dried Elderberries • 1 Cinnamon Stick • 3 Whole Star Anise • 2 Teaspoons Marshmallow root pieces. • 2 Teaspoons of Dried Ginger pieces or 1 thumb size fresh sliced. • 500g Very Thick Manuka Honey MGO 550+/UMF 15+ • 1 Litre (1000ml) Purified Water • 150ml Echinacea Tincture or Brandy Simmer the dried elderberries, cinnamon, star anise, ginger and water covered until the water has reduced by 3/4 (250mls). If you are diabetic, taking diabetes medication or dont like the taste, leave out the Star Anise or replace with dried Orange Peel. Turn off heat and allow to sit covered and cool down completely for at least 1 to 2 hours. Strain liquid through cheesecloth. Measure out liquid to ensure it is 250mls. If less or a bit more note this down as you will need double the amount you measured out by two which is your honey. Put strained liquid back into the pot bring to a heat slightly above body temp, then take off heat. Add in double the amount of honey (500g), stirring until the honey has mixed well with the water. Allow to fully cool down. Add in your Echinacea Tincture. You product volume is 900mls. The echinacea tincture other than being great for colds, flus and your immune system will also help with the shelf life of your syrup. Alternatively, you can just use 150mls Brandy. The rule of thumb is roughly 15-20% alcohol per mls of syrup. Stored in an airtight clear glass bottle in the fridge, this syrup can last 4-6 months. I recommend clear bottles because if you start seeing mould, discard the syrup. A Little tip. If you are suffering from a bad dry harsh cough, make the following stock bottle blend: • 10 drops Xanthoxylum/Tomar Seed (Zanthoxylum armatum) essential oil. • 5 drops Australian Blue Cypress (Callitris intratropica) essential oil • 5 drops Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) essential oil. Mix this stock bottle well and allow to synergise for 3 - 5 days and store in the fridge. To Use, ad 1-2 drops of essential oil mix to 1 teaspoon of the elderberry syrup. Mix very well before ingesting, making sure to coat your throat. Repeat 3-4 times a day. The Xanthoxylum is a unique taste that may need getting used to.

Knowing the lifespan of an herbal product is extremely important. Please post this answer to my question? Please, anyone from Mountain Rose Herbs posting recipes on KZbin, please state the lifespan of the finished product, so people don’t get sick taking something they’ve kept too long, possibly! Hi there! If you keep this elderberry syrup in the fridge, it should last 6-8 months in a sealed bottle or jar. There are other ways to increase the shelf life if you are interested in having it around longer and not having to make it as often! A way to do this would be to double the honey or to add in a small amount of alcohol to deter bacteria and mold growth. If you check out this blog (blog.mountainroseherbs.com/elderberry-syrup-recipe) you will find some handy suggestions on how to increase shelf life as well as the full elderberry syrup recipe! I hope that helps! - Gracie
