Hi Johwey - You are so calm and organized and I really enjoy your tutorials. In stead of buying pigment powder, in your opinion, is using oil paints mixed with encaustic medium a good alternative to buying expensive paints? Thanks
@johwey2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it! :) To answer your question-- using oil paint is not a cost effective way to make encaustic paint. Plus you're introducing a lot of oil to the mix. Oil needs oxygen to cure/harden which it can't get once it's already mixed into the wax. This compromises your paint's durability.

Thank you for your kind words. As for the paint, you can pour every bit of paint in the mold so there's no waste. I just didn't want to overpour in that one mold so I may have left quite a bit in the container.

Thank you, your videos are very informative. I work with encaustic medium and use soy wax to clean my brushes. Soy is a water soluble wax so you can further wash brushes with a mild soap, the soy also leaves the brushes very soft. Will be looking for more videos. Have you used carnauba wax in the encaustic medium? Interested in knowing how it affects the finished product, the art piece.

Hi, great video and I hope you are well. Can I use Mica Powders for pigment? Thanks!
@johwey4 жыл бұрын
I would personally just use mica powders as finishing touches, and, as such, I've only used them brushed or burnished on an encaustic surface. You can certainly experiment with making encaustic paint using mica powders. It probably won't be as effective as pigment powders. Depending on the ratio, it may not stain well or make an even wash and you'll probably lose the luster if it's buried in too much wax.

Could we use colored clays to make our paint? Like Australian red clay or French green clay? Love your information & I will give it a try. Also is it okay to add a drop of essential oil to the paint? Thanks a lot.

You can definitely experiment with different kinds of earth pigments, especially test for lightfastness. And I've never tried adding essential oil to the paint. The sweet smell of the beeswax is enough for me. 😊

I have a lot of dry pigments I have used to make my own oil colors. They seems like the ones you have used. Do you think they are suitable for encaustic?

What kind of paper, or label are you using to identify the colors? I just put an order in to Earth Pigments,and will begin making my own paint.also a silicone mold..how much medium do you use to the 2 teaspoons of pigment?This was a fabulous tutorial..slow and easy..loved it.
@johwey7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Judith! ... I just use paper scraps to make labels, I have a box full of them. You can use anything you have on hand, even plain copy paper cut to size... I bet you had fun ordering your pigments. It's always difficult to choose from the many color choices... I use 1 oz of medium for every 2 teaspoons of pigment. This amount will make 1 bar of paint when using the same mold I used in the video. I hope this helps. :)

Do you ever have issues with the pigment not mixing in well? I tried this and the dry pigment clumped in tiny bits so the encaustic looks gritty.
@BelindaPort7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this demonstration! Well done. I also love your cabinet drawers in the background. Looks so organised. What pigments are you using and where do you buy it? I am taught that the paraffin wax and the soy wax effect the encaustic medium and even cause it to disintegrate. It is recommended to rather clean the brushes with encaustic medium or clear beeswax until there is no colour on the brush. It is especially important if you want to sell your art.
@johwey7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. Most of my pigments are from Earth Pigments and Sinopia. I wouldn't find using encaustic medium to be a cost-effective way of cleaning brushes. I have no problem with using paraffin or soy wax as a cleaning agent. I like how it rinses off paint. Any excess wax is wiped off with a paper towel and any residue left has negligible effect on my painting.

I know you used 2 teaspoons for the pigment, but 2) how much wax did you use in the can for the mold? 3) Can you provide a link for where & what kind of wax you get for the creation of the paint? Thank you so much! :)

Hi Kathryn! (1) I use Earth Pigments (earthpigments.com), all their pigments are non-toxic and they have lots of fun colors! (2) I used 1 ounce of medium. (3) I buy beeswax (to make encaustic medium) in bulk from a few different places, and just choose whichever is cheaper at the time. An online place I like is bulknaturaloils.com. :)

So when i mix my pigment with Encaustic medium and pour it into my silicon tray it looks fine until it hardens and the pigment settles to the bottom. what am i doing wrong? my working Temperature is 100 C.
@johwey4 жыл бұрын
Some pigments are inherently more difficult to incorporate into a medium. You can try using a smaller or shallower mold so that the paint solidifies before the pigment gets a chance to settle at the bottom. Alternatively, you can still use the paint you made but, instead of melting a little bit at a time on your palette, melt the whole thing so you get the chance to remix it again. I hope my reply helped.

Does making your own paints save money or is it just to make custom colors? I’m new to this medium and love it but it’s crazy expensive to get started!
@johwey6 жыл бұрын
In my experience, if you know you'll be doing a lot of painting, making your own medium and paints is definitely more cost-effective. The initial investment might be significant but it will save you a lot of money in the long run. But like I suggested in the video, I highly recommend buying a few ready-made paints even if you're thinking of making your paints because it's always good to have a benchmark.
