You can make some really amazing art with the Miura-Ori fold. The tessellated surface is fascinating to study and fun to use in art projects. In this video, I'll demonstrate how easy it is to make, as well as show you some of the art I've made with it.

This makes much more sense than the last tutorial I saw...I appreciate that you tried to make it simple for the beginners to understand, rather than try to be impressive.

When I first saw this origami on PBS, I was in my early 20's. Back then, people didn't have access to information as easily as they do today. All I had to go on was a few seconds of footage as they briefly covered other tessellated forms. When the show was over, I was obsessed with making it. Of course, the show really didn't tell me how it was made, just that someone had made it. After several days and dozens of attempts that ended in other shapes that were pretty cool, I had figured out the shape I needed, but not the way I needed to fold the paper to make it. I was physically ill from trying to get a sheet a paper to make this repeating parallelogram pattern. Finally, I realized the thing about the diagonals being half the length of the top and base (I needed to take down the diagonals one step further). After that, the hardest part was seeing the shapes I need to express among all the squares and triangles going this way and that way.

Thank you. I have read books on this, and seen videos. With this previous knowledge and your video, I have met with success.

After figuring out the fold, my first attempt at the final stage took more than an hour to complete. Now, I can complete the same stage in around a minute. It's the difference between kind of knowing something and really understanding it. The same is true for almost every discipline. Like art, when you start something new, you may know about how to do it, but you may not truly understand what you are doing. The process of moving from knowing to understanding involves practice, experience and being critical of as many things as you can to discover all the nuances that can set your work apart from others. This process can be unpleasant--even sickening. But working through that difficulty is a common trait for people who find the greatest success from their efforts.

To anyone who may be confused: This is a Miura-Ori fold. Koryo did a map fold pattern that adds a unique angle to the entire sheet. That is most often thought of when referencing Miura. But, there are several folds associated with the Miura-Ori research paper. To get to the map fold, the two developed the tesselated patterns of corrugated folds, referred to as the Miura-Ori origami fold. I do the fold that was first mentioned in the original research paper published in the late 1970s. To do the Miura Map Fold, the angle of reciprocation is around 80 degrees applied globally to the vertical concertina folds. See the reference in the description. (Edited to add more detail and correct spelling.)

Here's another way to fold it using a rectangle. This is better than a square because you can make a really long, continuous piece that can form an awesome cylinder. James Randolph demos a way to make these folds on almost any starting shape. Give it a try: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKiYg3-sg5yZj6M

This is the easiest method for folding to create the herringbone pattern that I've come across so far...Can this same method work if you're starting with rectangular rather than square paper?
@DrawMakeCode
@DrawMakeCode 5 жыл бұрын
It can work, so long as the folds are square. I use a square because it's easier to keep it square.

You have made a simple tessellation too complicated...?
@DrawMakeCode
@DrawMakeCode 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I appreciate the feedback -- even if it's not so good. You are right. I do make it more complicated than it has to be. But the extra work is worth it to me. There is a more simple method, but it lacks some of the characteristics my method creates. If you prefer the simpler method, I have provided links to it in the description. Good luck and happy folding.

I'm sorry this wasn't helpful. When I learn from videos, some just don't help so much. I can't learn from everyone. I don't expect everyone to learn from me. I hope you've found someone who can help you learn to make this fold. Once you learn, you'll be so happy you did. Thanks for commenting! Good luck!
