heres how i would go for doing the top or cap of the mushroom 1. use a cube with subdivision surface modifier, change the value(not render) to 2 2. use loop cuts to shape it 3. just modify it 4. done

Finally you do a new style, thats how you progress! If you want to do a massive leap in textures, you should learn procedural modeling or substance painter to really take your stuff to the next level.
