How to Make Flowing Watercolor Brushes in Photoshop

How to make watercolor brushes in Photoshop. Learn to make custom watercolor brushes in photoshop. These custom photoshop brushes have a cloudy, light texture that simulates the natural flow of real watercolor brushes. Great tutorial! But I can't help to notice the brush creates borders on some occasions. To solve this, after you use levels on the clouds, you can go to filters > others > offset and adjust the image so the borders will appear as they would during your use. Then, you can paint over it or just use the patch tool as I did to make it seamless. Hope it helps 🤟

Thanks Daniel, this is definitely helpful! A shortcut for this is to make the texture in 1042x1024 or 2048x2048 for larger clouds and it will automatically make the clouds seamless.

The only thing I did diferent is making the cloud pattern a seamless one since when I use a big brush I could see the edges where the cloud pattern ended and started again. The oil brush from the legacy looked a bit different for me - the edges were smooth (blurry) compared to yours. So, I decided to use the "Heavy smear wax crayon" from the legacy "dry media brushes". It worked very well!! Thanks for another fantastic tutorial

Yes, you could also set up your working canvas in multiples of 2. 512, 1024 pixels are both good sizes for this. Your clouds will automatically be seamless. You can also use the cloud pattern from Photoshop defaults as well. Photoshop has many options. I’m so glad this was helpful!

There is a major flaw with this technique, not only is the brush rotating inconveniently, so you can literally determine the distance of the brush behavior and settings when using different brush sizes, but also the texture has a big issue in the other hand. When drawing at larger canvas areas, you will sooner or later hit the digital limits of that preset using that specific texture. The edges are not in mirror or tandem, which means, if your upper left corner has a height translucent edge while your lower right is a hard cloud shadow (even a tiny bit darker is enough) in comparison, you will clearly see the seam while drawing. This tutorial should be refreshed or taken down to avoid people using it and not knowing what causes these issues. Not everyone is a techy like myself.
