We are making all the parts that will will be needed to make the frames for our Layens horizontal hives. This includes making the top bar, two side bars, and the bottom bar that will make up each frame, and also drilling the holes that will be used to add wire to the frames. To get a copy of the plans that we downloaded for free, click here: horizontalhive.com/

Making the jigs is quite time consuming but speeds up the manufacturing heaps. Thanks for the Husband and Wife video.

Great video!! Love how you guys showed your process and are building together 🙂. I have a Construction business and am always building, but being in a shop setting or building multiple components is a learning process for me. So I LOVE how you show your jigs and STEPS!! Thanks a bunch!! Its very helpful. I just completed 7 boxes. Next I need to finish my frames and get a couple of traps built. Hope you guys are in the bees by now🙂....thanks again

We have 4 hives now and are waiting to see who makes it through the winter. Building the frames was definitely the most time-consuming part of this effort. Miller Bee Supply in Wilkesboro, NC is one of the few US companies that makes their own Langstroth frames in-house, and they are talking about setting up to make Layens frames. If they do that, we'll buy the frame parts from them in the future and use our jigs to put them together.

Yes, it is! Making the frames is my least favorite part. Miller Bee Supply just started selling Layens frames, and we're really excited about that.

Building some Laynes hives myself this year. Y’all are not to far away. I’m north of Danville in the Chatham area.

Good luck with your new hives, Neighbor! We just started building some 20 frame insulated horizontal hives, and hope to have that video released soon. We've been talking with Tyler at Miller Bee Supply in Wilkesboro, NC, and they are talking about setting up a production line to make Layens frames. If they do, we'll buy from them (locally) since the frames are the most time-consuming part of equipment building.

what kind of a router bit are you using for shaving off 1/4 on the side bars? Somehow my router often rips/splits the bar. I'm probably using the wrong bit. Thanks

I think we were using a 3/4" straight bit, but we were making 2 passes - taking off about 1/8" at a time. It left the sides pretty rough so that we had to clean them up with a knife. Since we made this video, Miller Bee Supply has started making Layens frames. They are located close to us, and so we'll be buying frames from them going forward.

What router bit did you use? Mine was tearing off terribly. I still have hundreds to build and have been dreading the side bars because of that issue. Even though I own a construction business I don’t have a lot of router table or router experience..lol

Roy thinks it's a 3/4" straight bit. And it would work better if you take off the material in 2 passes. He did it in one, and it tore out terribly. I came behind him with a razor knife to trim off the jagged edges. Good luck!

Roy, you have anytime left to use that fishing boat ?😅

That boat didn't get in the water at all last summer. The kayaks get used a lot, but the fishing boat - not so much. Gotta make it happen this summer. Thanks for watching!

I wish I had your patience. I just couldn't sit there and make 50 frames.
