Thank you for posting this, it was a big help! You gave me the idea to cut the bubble wrap in strips, and use it as a heat-activated tape. Using the tip of a glue gun to smooth and set it, it self-bonded, did not smoke, and retained the flexibility and translucency I needed for my prototype. For those concerned about the dangers of melting bubble wrap: Most bubble wrap is LDPE, which is sometimes manufactured as… hot melt adhesive. Ventilation is recommended with any hot glue application. As a point of comparison, it is interesting to read MSDS precautions for commonly-recommended room temp adhesives (Elmer’s spray adhesive, E6000, etc.).

I have cut pieces from the opaque white plastic reservoirs of auto window wipers and various containers. You can use a soldering iron to melt them and fuse them into the plastic being repaired. I have even repaired gasoline tanks for outboard motors, which are very difficult to adhere to. It is good to keep a variety of used plastic, to match the material you wish to repair. Thanks for a nice clear video.

This works well with some things that cannot normally be glued. I needed to refit a connection to a polyethylene spray tank. No glue works on polyethylene but a few plastic bags of the same material could be melted and bonded to the tank, sealing in the connector permanently. Just make sure that you pick the correct material for the job.

Nice idea to glue large surfaces and re-using bubble wrap. Toxic fumes - well, if you don´t want to be exposed to toxic fumes, don´t use hot glue. If you are worried about using (too much) electricity, don´t use hot glue. If you are concerned about re-using bubble wrap instead of throwing it away and buy glue sticks, just think again. Recycling companies don´t run their dumptrucks with water, and they don´t run their recycling fabrics with air. Take that in account, too.

+Victor V. But plastic does release very harmful chemicals when exposed to too much heat. Please be careful to only do this in a well ventilated space. It is not safe if you can smell any kind of odor once you start melting the plastic. Other than the risk of breathing toxic fumes, I think this is a clever way to reuse old plastic. :) www.dailykos.com/story/2012/6/2/1096855/-PSA-Burning-Plastic-Can-Kill-You

Soda bottles are thermoplastic, that is how they are formed. You have a bottle blank that looks like a thick test tube with threads, you heat and expand it to get the bottle shape. Definitely a thermoplast.

Yeah, free hot glue, it only costs a ridiculous amount in packing materials (not free unless you get a lot of stuff delivered, and that is what is used...), a LOT more in electrical costs (think ~40W vs ~1500W - though not likely significant unless you do a lot of gluing), and the last little 'inconsequential tidbit, you have to not care that your projects catches fire or melts... lol Not exactly a great idea, but if you're really THAT cheap, you've probably got bigger issues...

@jacobwcrosby
@jacobwcrosby 8 жыл бұрын
Well, if you can't "go out and afford glue sticks" you probably have other concerns, as mentioned. That being said, if for some bizarre reason you can not be bothered to go and buy the correct tool for a given job, you really shouldn't be working with these sorts of tools anyway. Finally, barring all other possible excuses, if you have a hot glue gun and need some material for it, there are plenty of other things that melt in a hut glue gun, things that will *NOT* give of toxic fumes if they overheat, or indeed, if they are heated at all... You know that smell when certain plastics get hot, just imagine that is the smell of cancer, because if you are melting/burning most plastics, the fumes you are breathing in are indeed toxic.
@atomic8681
@atomic8681 8 жыл бұрын
Glue gun sticks are made of plastic.
@jacobwcrosby
@jacobwcrosby 8 жыл бұрын
Atomic86 not all plastics are toxic however, plastics that are meant to be subjected to heat, that is, specifically designed for such use are typically not toxic, the plastics (Styrofoam and the like) that are not meant to be heated, burned or otherwise experience extreme thermal load, are generally not treated for thermal load, since it's not what they are designed for.
