I'll admit I'm a bit tired of the big companies serving up an endless line of products for us to buy and being old enough to remember the original old-skool DIY attitude that was ported over from historical wargaming this video really hits the mark. Thanks! The end results speak volumes and although I totally understand that many folks will find it easier to just buy the 'genuine' article I hope this inspires some to go DIY. I think your down-to-earth attitude really breaks down entry barriers so do please keep putting out such refreshing and useful stuff. I for one would be far more proud to have such bases under my minis, thanks for the inspiration folks, keep it coming!

Absalutely love your channel. I’ve been wargaming since 1976, yes I am ancient. I had a sports injury in 1986, that left me paralysed from shoulders down & wheelchair bound. I have been trying to perfect ways of painting, basing and gaming, with this handicap ever since. I’ve have been doing quite well really, but your simple painting techniques have revolutionised my painting skills and has helped me produce a not too bad finished model. Wow, those look great with the washes! I will definitely use these techniques for my Mechanicus army once I get to Basing. The zip tie idea is great, I will have to use that in future! Another option for making heavier duty grating than that produced by mosquito mesh is plastic canvas mesh (sometimes known as granny grating by wargamers and modellers), available from places that sell cross stitch stuff.

For rivets you can use small cardboard circles cut with shortened and sharpened hypodermic needle or bga solder balls.

I'm glad you cited the music cuz I spent part of the video trying to place it. At various parts it gave me vibes of Shadowrun Returns and Quake 3. Also, I recently had to strip a wrought iron railing and fix some rust. It was big and took several days and at one point a little bit of new rust formed on the exposed metal. Simple to deal with, but it stood out to me that before turning orange, the new rust actually started off yellow.

I use the same trick about the cardboard using thicker cardboard though to make urban bases I cut the cardboard along the round of the base and then separate it in squares of about 2cm size i create irregular borders like the tarmac or concrete was ripped away by explosions and then i glue them to the base making irregular allignemnt too to create more movement I use the hobby knife to create holes and cracks on the surface as well I glue some remains from the cutting of the cardboard on top of the bottom layer to create rubbles hat i later blend better with the bottom tarmac putting sand in selected way and then i start to decorate the bases with sand in and all things i think they could look good on a devastated city I paint them and they look amazing and like your industrial bases they are made from leftovers Your industrial bases are amazing too! Keep up the good work

Just wanted to say thanks; I bought the Zone Mortalis bases myself for use with an Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team, but I was at a loss for what to do for the Transuranic Arquebus gunner's oval base until I saw this video pop up in my subscription feed. This is a big help, and has also inspired me to try Typhus Corrosion on all the team's bases.

Instead of cardboard, try using a thin layer of plaster of paris. It sands down to a more accurate circle than you can cut and if you're a bit rough with the mixing, you'll get little air bubbles which resembles pitted corrosion on metal.

Cheaper than MDF blanks, and plastic: Get hole saw(s) of the correct size. Drill blanks from scrap plastic, likely with interesting features on it already. I use old laptop, computer screen, TV cases. Thick, durable plastic. The trick is to first make a hole in a piece of scrap wood board, then remove the drill bit from the saw, and use the board as a guide. That way you don't drill a hole in the middle of the would be base (unless you want one there).

I use different thicknesses of solder for making wires/piping. it's easy to bend into shape, and joining a thinner piece to a larger one gives the impression of a stripped cable. Try it and see just how easy it is to do, and how good it looks when painted :-) You can also use it for wires hanging out of buildings/broken vehicles too.

Ooo. Have bought some of the texture rollers from GSW, but will be trying this out on some of my larger based models! I play Guard so doing hundreds of 25mm bases would take a lot of time and a lot of junk, but doing this to add variety to those big 60mm heavy weapons team and Sentinel bases seems like a good way to liven them up! Plus the simple tips for the paint job were great, will definitely be using some of those!
