Since Charlie could not pick up the remote (one of the options in the Bomb Collar mod), if it had happened that Max died with the remote, then Charlie wouldn't have been able to pick up the remote and run away, leaving the remote next to the dead body and Charlie stranded there unable to leave its side, not exactly what you suggested but close enough imo :)
