Fruit leather is so easy to make! They are a good way to use to up ripe fruit and the end result is a delicious and healthy snack the whole family will love. Making your own can help save money too!
The best dehydrator (ever!): amzn.to/2ofvZzR
Extra fruit roll sheets: amzn.to/2oPnUQi
Simple recipe makes one batch. Feel free to double the recipe and make 2 at once, if your blender/ processor is large enough:
1/2 blender or food processor of fruit (of your choice) (approximately 3 cups)
1/2 cup apple sauce
liquid sweetener, as desired (optional)
1 teaspoon lemon Juice (only if using a fruit that darkens after cutting)
Directions:
Add fruit, apple sauce and lemon juice (if using) to blender or food processor and blend. If you find machine is struggling to blend you can add apple juice concentrate (or a small bit of juice). If using sweetener be sure its liquid as a crystal one will make the finished product crunchy instead of leathery. Honey, agave nectar or apple juice concentrate work best. Add sweetener and taste. Continue to adjust as needed until desired taste is achieved.
If using a dehydrator: Pour on fruit roll sheet that came with the dehydrator and has been lightly sprayed with oil to prevent sticking. Set dehydrator to 135 degrees and dehydrate until leathery but still very pliable. Store in air tight container and use within 2-3 months.
If using an oven: Place parchment paper on baking sheet. Pour mixture onto parchment paper that has been lightly sprayed with oil to prevent sticking. Place in oven that has been set to lowest setting (usually between 170 and 200 degrees). Bake for 3-5 hours until leathery but still pliable. Store in air tight container and use within 2-3 months.
Price comparison:
$.61(peaches) + $.33 (apple sauce) +$.10 (apple juice concentrate) = $1.04 per batch. Each batch makes 8 fruit leathers. Health food stores sell them for about 80 cents each or $6.40 for 8. Making 4 batches like I did in the video not only made 32 convenient and healthy snacks but saved us $21.44!
List of sample fruits that work well (feel free to experiment): Apricots, bananas, blackberries
blueberries, boysenberries, cherries, grapes, guava, kiwi, mangos, nectarines, papayas, peaches, pears, pineapple, plums, raspberries, strawberries.
Also, straight applesauce poured right on the prepared pan also make a super simple and easy apple fruit roll.
Here is the dehydrator I use: www.amazon.com/...

Thank you! A dehydrator found it's way into my kitchen after blanching a bunch of loquats a few days ago. Your video was the first one I clicked on and I'm excited to give it a go. Thank you for putting an option in the recipe for using no sweetener. I am diabetic, so I have to watch my sugar intake, but snacks like this are needed for those times when my sugar is low, but I'm not in a complete crash, and I want to avoid the rebound where my sugar spikes real high too.

Thanks Frugalgreengirl! I see I am not using enough oil on my trays. Still learning... Once I forgot the oil completely. Hard lesson. But saved it by reconstituting and re-dehydrating. Great tip on the "Charlie Brown" peaches. Not real marketable, but perfect for Fruit-Roll-ups. Trying to learn this winter for the summers bounties. (Snacking on Honey Glazed Banana chips... My keyboard is sticky. 8^) )

"Scientists are now telling us zucchinis and pumpkins cucumbers are fruits now"... No.. they were ALWAYS fruits lol, thats not a new fangled fad they just came up with. The difference is, a fruit is a seed bearing structure a plant grows for reproduction. A vegetable, you're eating parts of the plant itself, its leaves, its roots, and stems.

@frugalgreengirl 10 жыл бұрын
So I have a question for you. What about times like last week when we had a solid week of overcast and rainy days forcasted and yet produce to preserve? The freezer draws power the entire time the food is in there until it is used. Canning takes more electricity then the dehydrator and the dehydrated food has better nutritional content. Is it better to just let the food go bad then but store bought stuff instead?
@FidelKastrat

frugalgreengirl Hi frugalgirl. This was not meant offensive - so forgive me. It’s just : I am a engaged in solar cooking and solar drying also belongs to those simple solar technologies. It was just meant in a way like: haven’t you thought about using a solar dehydrator in the future? Yes, ok it maybe it sounded offensive but was not meant this way. Solar dehydrators are a perfect solution in a way because you will use them only in summer - when there is sunshine ^^ but of course you can have bad days or weeks even in a northern summer, so I would suggest a hybrid system would be the best. Forgive me lady - I like your videos, they are very good and inspiring and you are an interesting and very special person. I was especially inspired very much by your greenhouse video. Maybe I will tell you about it.

they're pretty much just juice. If you wanted to add lemon to a fruit you would get the flavor still, it would just take longer to dehydrate.
