How to Make Kombucha! (With or w/o a scoby)

Have you actually made kombucha using a store-bought bottle? I read somewhere that it should be the original unflavored kind. I moved and lost my SCOBY and haven't found anybody online that has one they could pass on to me so I thought I would try making it using the store-bought but I don't want to waste money on it if it's not going to work.
