Because when you "start doing something", you haven't done it yet at that point and it is about to happen, thus prospective. It's not the same as past tense, but relative point to the following verb 시작하다. To begin something entails the meaning that it hasn't happened yet and is about to happen from that moment. 저는 작년에 한국어 노래 듣기 시작했어요. = You hadn't listened to Korean songs before that moment (last year) when you started doing it... so listening to Korean songs were future event when you put yourself in that moment of starting the action of listening. Hope this helps!

Is it possible to use -기 시작하다 to say "I WILL start doing something"? Like, is it okay to conjugate 시작하다 into the Future Tense to communicate that? Or would that basically be the equivalent of the -기 했다 form? Lol (To explain further 😂 in case I'm confusing you): "I decided to..." & "I will.../I will start..." are similar in that they signify a making up of your mind to do something, right? So I'm wondering if -기 시작하다 + (으)ㄹ 거예요 (I WILL start...) is a valid conjugation, or if it is unnatural. To say "I WILL start..." should I just stick to -기 했다 (I decided/planned to)? Thank you in advance for any help you give!!

Thank you for the video it clarifies many doubts! But I still have a question left from my book, in the sentence "우리 학교에서 미나가 공부를 제일 잘해요" Why do we have to use 를 after 공부 and not 는 ? Because 미나 is the subject of the sentence ?

Noun + 하다 verbs are in fact N을/를 하다: that noun is the object, and we just omit the object particle -을/를 very often in conversations. So 공부를 하다 is a whole chunk!

What the difference between 공부하기 싫어 and 공부하는 거 싫어 ?

It's not as clear cut as I wish, but in general... you would use 공부하기 싫어 to say "I don't want to study right now"... you need to study but you are procrastinating and avoiding it, then you say ~기 싫어 rather than ~는 거 싫어. On the other hand, when you are stating your general preference, you use ~는 거 more often. "I don't like/hate studying" = 공부하는 거 싫어. Again, there are overlaps in their usages, but these are more clear contexts you can remember and put to use in your daily Korean usage!
