This week I built a set of six long bar clamps. I bought a couple meters of flat steel, cut it into pieces and welded everything back together in the shape of a clamp. Simple! For the spindles I used pieces of M16 threaded rod. Talking about machinery, all you really need for making a set of these clamps is a grinder, a drill and a welder. However, a chop saw is very convenient and of course I just had to show off my new homemade belt grinder.

I know this was a few years ago now, but this is the first video of yours I have come across and I had to say how much I like your approach to designing the things you make. These clamps and the belt sander are simple, easy to make and extremely robust. Most "maker" type would fall short on every one of these, the trend is to make things which are overly complicated, awkward to make, expensive in components and not actually working that well.

in my shop i have lathes, mills, CNC machines, drills and all kinds of fabrication means. last month I started working with wood, so I had to get some large clamps. I didn't even though of fabricating them cause I though I was too damn difficult. now I'm watching you fabricating them with your fingernails on a tiny shop with tiny tools and I'm self kicking my self in the ass. I own a huge fabrication shop and I can't even fab my own shit. you really do remind me of myself as a young fabricator on a garage with no tools but a lot of self confidence and will to do. I really thank you for reminding me that "when you want, you can". please never give up man, and when you get really big in fabrication never forget that everything is possible even with no tools. THANK YOU.

The cross pin is absolutely necessary. I've made these clamps many times over the years and after some use the handles will slip on the threaded rod if you don't have a pin to stop them or small bolt going through the handle and rod. You did a really good job with the clamps. Great job done well.

Very well made video, very good attention to detail. I work as a Senior VP of Engineering and quality, and a DiY enthusiast and I like to make stuff, and I over engineer everything I make and make it super tough and strong and heavy, and this video meets all my expectations. Like the dry humor, especially about the 639 people asking for the metal pin for the handle. Good work, keep it up.

Brilliant build. I think I'll give these a go, but will use aluminium for the long bar. I also thought that if the bar was bolted on to the top jaw, I could swap out the bar for long or short bars as needed. Then I can have the shorter clamps for every day use, and then with a few minutes work with a couple of spanners, I could have a set of long clamps. Thanks for the inspiration.

For those who don't have taps for creating the threaded hole for the retaining bolt, just drill a bolt clearance hole and use a bolt and nut. For extra neatness, use a thin nut and cut off the protruding part of the bolt thread. A great video and really useful low cost clamps.

Making your own clamps is soo nice, monetary good too. Mainly because under the right kind of shining light, you can get the stock materials for next to nothing. Example: from a friend i inherited 7 spring compressing kits, that's 14 Acme threads. Sure, they were a bit worn out, but for a F clamp, that's perfectly okay, which is corroborated by the fact that i've been using the home made clamps for so long now that i'm at the point where i have to replace the spine on a few of them because i whaled on them sooo much they're starting to curve, yet the threads are just as i have received them.

really nice idea on the swivel ends of the clamp.. On the back, if it has too much swivel, grind a smaller width grouve, a little further back, and use a smaller washer, or a piece of flat plate, drilled like a washer, split it in half, slide it over the all thread, and then tack it back together.. You can adjust the amount of swivel you want in your clamps.. Too much is a pain in the tail.. Not enough is not bad, as long as it spins easily.. Cheers.. Nice Clamps.. Also saw you converting them to parallel clamps.. Also a great idea.. Wouldn't take long to switch them back and forth and use them for either metal or glue ups.. Cheers Mate from the USA.. Nice Job.. Subbed!!

What you could do is if you wanted to change the design of your F clamps by making them spread items as well as clamp all you need do is unloosing the fixed side then slide it up a bit drill a hole in the long section that way it still clamps but you can take the short bits off turn them around put them back together bolt back in ready to spread cool idea oh yea.
