I just got my 1A in Saskatchewan at 25 years old, I’ve ran heavy equipment for 6 years and thought to expand my horizons. Did you get a job? I got my Class 1 Commercial Driver's License in Alberta and can't find any work. I have: Master's of Education Bachelor's History of Science 10 years industrial, warehouse, shipping / receiving Willing to relocate, clean driver's abstract, no drugs and alcohol. Trilingual: English, French & Korean I'm super disappointed. Lot's of job postings online - but they all want 2 - 5 years experience.

Although it’s an automatic which is not very cool. I want to do better things with my license I paid for from my own pocket and am looking to get into the oilfield this winter and if I enjoy it I may not come back to the highway crew.

I've been applying to 10 to 15 companies per day since the beginning of July and so far no luck. When I visit yards, warehouses, offices in person I get a mixed reception: Half the companies are polite and ask if I would like to leave a resume: Which I do. The other half of the companies make it difficult to speak to anyone or simply say they have no openings or that they require 2-5 years of driving experience. Ahhhh.... I'm not giving up. My wonderful (common law) wife and I just moved to Grande Prairie 6 months ago so she could be closer to family... nothing really has gone right since we got here, I'm nearly 50, only have a grade 9 education, nearly 20K in debt to the bank, don't have a job yet (she just got one but it's a 3 week temporary job for the county that will hopefully lead to something better) I'm battling depression and an inferiority complex cultivated since childhood, being a survivor of sexual abuse as a child (like many people) and an adopted family that disowned me after I revealed that it happened I've never been able to achieve anything substantial. I have a month left of employment benefits and am just starting to try and get a class 3 drivers licence, no semi, just 3 axle with no air brake, an accidental driving offence in Manitoba is preventing me from getting a class 1, wish me luck.

I've never really had much in life material or finance wise, but I'm a bit of a minimalist, I don't need material possessions, I don't drink or do drugs an have on many occasions have been able to put away money from 5K -40K but always get depressed or annoyed with a job, quit and just hide from society and slowly drain my savings till I have to get a new job again. If only I could get a job in the oil fields for a few years, someone like me could live comfortably on the interest from 250K, MOST people couldn't what with their mortgage, vehicle payments, kids and fancy dinners and gifts for wifey, but I really don't have those financial responsibilities. good video.

Well, here I am... 16 days before my Class 1 road test. I've had a Class 3-Q for 10 years, running dump trucks hauling heavy equipment & driving concrete mixers in Alberta. I did the written test, and I'm studying / taking a 3-day training course before I take the road test. I'm confident I can challenge the test and pass, with minimal formal training. Everything you've said has been either my experience as well, or exactly what I've heard transpires in the patch... It's rough work, but the pay is as good as it gets for a driver. 👍🏻

Smart Drive Test I had 12 years before going into the patch. If you have started off in the patch swamping or some other industry related job you have a better understanding of the conditions you will encounter but to throw someone in a truck green as grass is not safe to themselves or the other users of industrial roads. The industry has tried to address this issue with programs such as GODI ( General Oilfield Driver Inprovement) and Oilfield Haulers tickets. Turning a driver loose with only having a few days under their belt is a poor judgment on the company's part. We all pay for that in the industry. There's not a shortage in the patch it's a willingness to treat people better so they stay.

Darrin is right. There’s no shortage of drivers. There is a pay shortage and terrible treatment.
