Aww, your mama is cute! :) My father has a best friend who married a Filipino woman. She makes lumpia for all her friends for the holidays and birthdays and special occasions. I consider myself to be pretty lucky to know her and receive a plate of lumpia frequently. I could never get tired of this dish, it's delicious. :)

I learned to make lumpia from my American mother, taught by her Japanese best friend, taught to her by who- knows? We use ground beef instead of pork (less greasy) and cabbage, carrots, and onions; then soy and sesame, garlic powder, and roll tight. The egg works like glue.... Fry in oil. Mmmmmm.... Been making them for decades. It's not the type of recipe you can even measure for. It's the feel and smell and texture- that tells you it'll be amazing!

Lumpia is far superior to Chinese egg rolls. The key is using the thin wrappers, which are only available in Asian food stores.

ComicLoverPhoenix yes, it's a signature dish from Semarang, Central Java and called lumpia goreng (fried lumpia), usually filled with radish and chicken. And also from Bandung, West Java. But it's called lumpia basah (wet lumpia) because the skin isn't fried. the lumpia skin itself is different though, in indonesia the skin is thinner and dry

Lumpia is a bonding experience with many. I recall me and my mother would prep and roll for hours. Sometimes with friends. I would call it a lumpia bee! ha! ha! Hours and patience to make... minutes for the guest to consume. But they will always remember you for the lumpia anytime they see you. You know the filipinas love you if they will make you lumpia.
