It would be interesting to see some footage of these following a period of growth - perhaps after 2 weeks, then a month, then 2 months, etc. Because the foliage will (hopefully) grow, these balls will begin to change their appearance after a week or so as they grow longer and develop more leaves. They will only remain looking like balls for a short period of time. Clipping them to keep their shape would be difficult as it's usually the new growth leaves at the tips of the stems that flourish and look good, whilst the leaves towards the base of the stem (which would be the ones remaining if new growth were clipped to maintain a ball-shape) usually deteriorate in appearance.

Yup. Also they don't like water on their leaves too much which makes me wonder how they'll do with this type of watering.

@@crazy4beatles I think the only way to water them would be to insert a straw into the top and pour in water to soak the soil or to dunk them in a bowl of water, but leave them to dry in semi-darkness before hanging back up. They certainly can't be watered in situ as it would drip onto the floor and cause a mess.

This thought has been haunting me for days now, ever since I first saw these videos. Almost nowhere do I come across a video or at least a photo of "this is what our plant looks like after a year". Especially after absolutely barbaric transplants. Looks like I'll have to study this subject in depth... or from my own experience.

@@juliju2073 Because Tradescantia plants grow so easily, it's worth having a go at this if you like it. I'd advise that you take a load of cuttings and root them in water before beginning. When it comes to watering the hanging balls, it would take a while and probably best to take them down and soak them in a bowl of water so that the soil can absorb it, then hang outdoors until they stop dripping. It would proably be worth mixing some of those water-retaining balls in with the soil to prolong times between watering.

The plant seems to be one of tradescantias, and if it is, it has a decent chance of shooting roots like this. It also really loves pruning, so it won't be a problem to keep the spherical shape. Also, since the stems are intended to be that short all the time, the amount of soil should be enough to feed so many plants. But there's one issue I see. Tradescantias love water in the soil... but hate water on their leaves. Plus, you'll have to fertilize it someday. There should be a way to access the soil without touching the surface parts of the plants for them to live long and healthy.
