We had close to a dozen LFS in my metropolitan area prior to the 2008/9 recession. We are now down to three and one of those is a satellite store of the other. This is not counting the big box Petco and Petsmarts. I was speaking with an owner of one of the ones I regularly visit and he was telling me how tough business is these days and how he might not be able to continue with the shop. I’d be very, very cautious about opening an LFS these days.

I understand the stress of wanting to put out content. It can be very stressful at times; like a nagging thought in the back of your mind reminding you that you haven't made a video in a while. I just want to say that I appreciate your channel and channels like it. It has really helped me with my own saltwater tank!

Nicely done video Ryan. Buying second hand equipment is a good way to start with out breaking your wallet. Other variables come into play as well like the size of the tank and the equipment you’ll need for your reef to thrive.

Thank you Rogue. Pretty much everything of mine was second hand at first

I have a question, I have tangs, clowns, bangaii and some hermits and peppermint shrimp for clean up. My dream fish is a lion fish, specifically the dwarf variant. Can I put the lion with the current residents or will it need its own set up? Also, I agree so much with everything you just said. I’m a cancer survivor and live on a pension right now, I always wanted a marine set up but couldn’t afford a few thousand... I got my fist set up recently, 4 foot (don’t ask me how many litres cause I don’t know) 🤷🏻♀️ originally a fresh water tank, modified with a protein skimmer, large canister filter and makeshift sump, nothing drilled... lines everywhere... came with a blue tang (who carked it on the 20 minute ride home) one very sad occilaris clown, a depressed Bangai, 3 very fat peppermint shrimp and more damn Aptasia than I’ve ever seen in my life. I paid $300 AUD so about £150 give or take. Then I got 3 decent sized acans, about the size of my hand, a cute little elegance, and a large pulsing Xenia for $60 (£30) then got 2 zoas colony’s and a huge toadstool for $90 (£45) and then I found a yellow tang, blue tang, clown pair, and a double headed medium sized hammer coral for $300 (£150) all of this was all second hand, shut downs or people wanting to go in a different direction. It’s saved me a ton of money, especially on the fish. A yellow tang alone retails for around $200 where I live. I fully intend to frag my corals soon as I’m confident I’ve got their care and feeding under control. All corals I looked for quick growth rate above what I actually want right now.

Making money isn't a priority for me with this hobby. That said, i have had thoughts of trying. Thought of selling phyto and rotifers a while back, been culturing for a couple years now, small money, yes, but has a possibility for repeat customers and a need to grow larger, turn my culturing station, into a culturing lab. Was just some thoughts, don't really have the motivation to start advertising and then making appointments for pick up. I have enough crap going on as it is. I also have made some recent purchases at a frag swap that i would like to try make a few bucks on someday. Among my many purchases are a few that stand out, a hydnaphora (something i haven't seen in the shops), a 6 colored acan, ( another i have never seen, seen rainbows with 3-4 colors, but never 6, it's a bit slower growing than the others, but has started producing more heads since purchase about a month ago. an atomic mushroom, (super bright orange mushroom) thats the one i have higher hopes for, nothing like a bounce shroom, but was $80 in his store when he had 3, the last one he had at the swap for $60, couldn't resist.

I'd give anything to own a fish store!! My credit is terrible from medical bills so I don't think I'd ever get a loan from any bank! I'm currently breeding rainbowfish and several others like African cichlids and make a couple hundred a month but spend it all right back for fish food substrates etc. Even recently bought a 100 gallon that fish breeding paid for!!!

I do enjoy your videos and watch them week in week out but but i believe Buying second hand is damaging this hobby, not supporting your lfs by buying second hand makes more and more shops close down
@PrestigeReef5 жыл бұрын
I understand your point of view, however I've spent a lot of time with industry manufacturers and retail stores, the average life span of a new hobbyist is just over 1 year before they give up, this hobby has an incredibly high turn over rate. Most second hand equipment is almost brand new, and the people that are buying that equipment then go on to purchase livestock from the retailers. These new people may not have entered the hobby if the expense was greater. Most stores see online stores as the enemy rather than people that are selling second hand.
