We go through lay off cycles. I have been in the industry since 2001, and ever 7 years, we seem to hit turbulence. Companies layoff thousands, then a year later, start ramping up again. It is almost like clockwork.

Most developers don't even master the fundamentals of programming or developing in general, even if they have a CS degree. How can people use AI/ML if they don't even have a decent math background, everything would be a black box for them. You could ask chatbots to summarize different concepts or spot annoying mistakes in code. But would you copy paste a whole codebase to the debugging for you? how does it process comments? Over use or relying on AI will make people complacent.

@@merpusderpulan7612 Well by that logic it shouldn't be hard for you to get a job as a machine learning engineer or scientist since you can google everything.

Software Engineering corporate jobs are relatively easy, including AI Engineering. You’re doing nothing new most of the time, and your team mainly only works on a small sub section of the entire software system. in my opinion, working at a restaurant is 10-100X more difficult than software engineering in practice. In terms of building with AI, if you’re clever, you don’t need to copy and paste an entire code base, you would just modularize the work flow(use AI to solve sections at a time). In my opinion, the actual issue will be that companies will no longer need large amounts of engineers to work on their systems, they can just empower a few really competent engineers with AI tools to 10X or more their productivity. This could lead to engineers losing market value. And even worse(relatively), it could lead to very few entry level positions. Then again it could do the reverse. Since development is much easier and faster with AI tools, companies might just hire more inexperienced people, pay them less, and empower them with AI tools to make up for their lack of experience. It will be interesting to see how these next few years play out.

Also, Deep Neural Networks are a black box period. Even the brightest of AI Researchers will tell you that they don’t understand how all these AI model parameters lead to such intelligent outputs. Further more, you don’t need to deeply understand the math, just a basic high level overview is suffice. The math has already been worked out and solved decades ago. Linear Algebra, Statistical Analysis, Calculus. The AI field simply implements different concepts in these fields in a certain way. Then they create open source libraries from their implementations. Then us feeble corporate engineers can simply copy, paste and it works(maybe test it if deadlines aren’t around the corner). Hooray for abstraction I guess.🎉

how hard is it to get a entry level CS job atm? i've got a year left of college for my cs degree...
@TannerBarcelos Жыл бұрын
It’s certainly not the best time. But you have a year left, so I’d say attack that time with all your ability to learn important topics, brush up on what you’re good at, and dig deeper into things you like and make sure you have a portfolio of work. With this AI boom, I haven’t heard internally at my company anything about “slowing down entry level hiring” but the trends nation / world wide might have a different outlook. Just do what you can to stand out. If I was you, or if you were like me (with what I do when working / studying) is leverage AI to learn better, faster, more efficient etc.

*Important For Nick To Read:* Here I am again with my earnest request. Honestly, you would be _much_ more interesting to watch if you watched a few Stephan Kinsella videos and learned the importance of full abolition of intellectual property laws. Then I’d trust that you would incorporate that knowledge in your discussion of software. That would be awesome☺️…..
