How do you go about valuing your work? Just getting started in making jewelry myself and am having a hard time deciding on pricing. So far I've made 1 pendant from 304 stainless and a shiva eye shell teardrop. It was a rather large pendant and an involved process, machined it out on a manual mill. I managed to sell it for $80, but I feel like that was both too low and too high at the same time. I put around 14 hours of time into it, but the materials weren't worth much. They were just very difficult to work with. I originally wanted $150 for it, but I accidentally took too much out on the facing side of the seating area. My wife talked me down to $80.
@GomeowCreations3 жыл бұрын
I use a random number generator.... I'm kidding but yeah you are going to have a hard time selling stainless steal items like that. You are competing with cheap Chinese items along with the metal not really being worth anything so most people will just not pay for it. According to your under you only got about $6 per hour for your work and that is not including materials. Even at your $150 price point is only $10 per hour. I'm not saying that you can't get more money for them but you have to find a way to add value to your work but I can't tell you how to do that seeing that I really don't know. Sorry I can't me of more help. 😅👍

@@GomeowCreations no worries, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. It's an interesting spot to be in for sure. When I get it down well and am making flawless pieces I could probably charge more just on the principle of it being hand crafted art. I mean painters do it XD. I think I might save the gemstones for more precious materials, and try my hand at simple engravings for the stainless. Or maybe just drop that material altogether except for very simple pieces. It's a real pain to work with. Gotta say I'm jealous of the way silver smiths get to wrap the bezel wire around the stone to make the setting. So much easier.

@@GomeowCreations I'm definitely going to. Just gotta make one more piece from the stainless. I was doing 2 as mother's day gifts on sort of a commission. In fairness I have to do both similar. After I get paid for those I'll be experimenting with some pure silver coins I've bought over the years to see what I can do in the way of casting. If that fails, I'll remelt them into sheet metal and go from there.

So if using more expensive metals like gold and silver, is there any way to make such a single ring (only one per design) using half the material? Or would that involve just making the gauge of sheet and width of ring band thinner? Also, with the difference in melding/heating temps between two metals, how do you know what solder to use for your joint, and do you heat one piece more (longer than the other to get an even temp or is that not a worry? Really like this idea. Also really like puzzle rings that aren’t soldered together but fit like this. Good video!
