I'm doing pickled eggs and garlic scapes today... You loosely tighten the lid WHILE hot. It doesn't expand it contracts as it cools pulling the lid down. Once cool test the popper then tighten the ring a bit more but not too tight. Your pickles will last literally for years on a shelf.
