The species of tree he used for anyone interested is Antiaris toxicaria, it contains a steroidal cadio glycoside called Antiarin from which their are two main enantiomers, Alpha and Beta for which the beta is the more toxic and is the form found in the tree. Its mechanism of activity is not all that dissimilar to that of Batrachotoxin, in that it binds to the sodium/potassium channel of a nerve cell and causes the ions to only flow in one direction. Where it differs from Batrachotoxin is that Antiarin specifically binds to the ATPase found in the heart causing cardiac failure whereas Batrachotoxin acts on the central nervous system in the brain causing complete paralysis followed by death.

Not to pull a Joe Rogan here, but ayahuasca is a brew made from 2 different plants which grow miles apart, and do nothing on their own but when combined have incredible psychoactive effects. Anyway, it's said that when asked how they knew to combine these two plants, the indigenous people say that the jungle told them. Whatever that means.

Just coming back from this Penan settlement in the interior of my country. 3 to 4 hours drive using 4x4 vehicle through timber track/road. Not just the Penan, most of the indigenous races, the iban, kayan, kenyah, lun bawang, kelabit and others do use blowpipe. The poison latex is extract from the "Ipoh" tree or scientifically name Antiaris toxicaria. Now days many of us built our blowpipe using aluminium pipe. It is much easier to build, cheaper and also much lighter to carry. The only weakness compare to the wood blowpipe is the breath we made when blowing the dart will dampened the inner tube of the aluminium built blowpipe easily while the wood built inner tube won't have this problem as the wood absorb the moisture. In the old days, we don't have the iron tip on the end of the dart as shown in the video. The dart is made from the bark of a species of palm tree. The end cork is also from the same tree. Now days we use umbrella, bicycle sprockets for the dart and rubber such as natural rubber slipper or those airless children bicycle tire as cork.

Interesting. Assuming this language is an old one, I suspect they would have made distinct words for such basic concepts by now. Although tone, gestures, whatever you call 'expressive' are where all words emerged from as language developed. It's true that every language does the same thing to an extent. Like you can say: "Again and again, and again, and again..." Even though the words themselves already mean the repetition. If there were no such word for repetition than the obvious way to suggest doing something over and over would be to say "do do do do"

In my native language that tree is called Vawmbal(vom bal) vawm=bear/ursa, bal=chipped/damaged. We, my ancestors don't make or know how to make poison from it, but we highly fear that kind of tree. Even making slight contact like climbing the tree could give you serious itch and blister your skin. A person allergic to it can get seriously ill, if he were to stand near it. Every part of that tree(bark/leaf/sap/fallen leaf) is pure death poison. Notice how the old dude taps his hatchet, he is trying to remove the sap and bits of the tree, because wiping is too risky.

If anyone is looking for more videos like this and haven't seen it already, I recommend Raphael Treza's documentary here on KZbin "The Borneo Death Blow". The lifestyle these individuals live is incredible. Truly connected with nature like their ancestors. Living in their ancient ways. Really unique and really inspiring. I've watched many of survival and exploration type videos and this is probably the most humane way to hunt/kill an animal I have seen. Ideally the prey may have no idea they are dying, like he said they just feel an itch before eventually succumbing to the wound. I'm almost jealous of these murder trees.
