I am so glad you posted this video. I'm new to clay and one of the reasons I wanted to do it was to make hairsticks. I have a LOT of hairsticks, mostly made by me, from chopsticks and dowel rods and knitting needles and even brightly coloured crochet hooks. But what I wonder about with clay is will they be strong enough ? When used with a hairslide like you did, the slide supports the stick, so there's not a lot of pressure. But when using a stick alone the pressure is far greater. Would it be best to use a strong wire, a dowel or a wooden skewer inside to strengthen the clay ? Sorry for the essay but of the videos I've watched I liked your presentation and explanations the best and really wanted your opinion. Thank you.

Hey! I like your question! Yes, you could do a few things to make it stronger. First, yes the best strength would come from putting a wood dowel as the center support for the stick. Second, you can experience with the amount of time you bake your clay. The longer you bake it the more strength it will have. I believe most clay manufacturers say 15 to 20 mins to bake clay. But some of my more delicate pieces I'll bake for 40 mins to an hour. And third, you could make the clay sticks thicker. The thicker the clay, the more stable it will be after baking. I would recommend using scrap clay (if you have some) to experience with each of these ideas. That way you don't make a piece you really love only to find out that it breaks. I've been there. It broke my heart. I hope this helped. I know being new to clay can be a little overwhelming cause it seems loke there are more questions than answer's. But at the end of the day it's just clay and it's all about having fun and experimenting! Lots of trial and error to find your style and what works for you. Have fun and let me know if you have any more questions.
