It is amazing how much we think we know until we see how much we didn't. You didn't leave one detail out gifting us all with a plethora of information. Thank you so much for this video and the opportunity for each of us to learn something we may not have otherwise.

Wow! This is amazing! I was just wondering whether you use the same approach for a much smaller dog? I’m really struggling with my eyes at the moment and end up using glass ones, but would love to know how you would tackle a much smaller eye. Thanks so much!
@FittobeLovedFelts

Thank you. I would definitely approach in the same way but just be aware that the smaller you go you may find it harder to get the same amount of detail. It is possible though with a bit of patience. You'll likely need to go even higher gauge with your needles but see what works. Maybe at least a 42 gauge. Also I find the twisted needles are useful to avoid big holey marks. Have good lighting to see what you are doing. Keep looking at the eyes from a distance to see what the overall look is. Even if you can't add all the tiny detail, see what you can do with colours and at the very least frame the eye with the eyelids to get a good shape and add the tiny dot/s for light reflection. Be sure to use fine wools eg merino to keep it all smooth looking. Hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes :-)

@@FittobeLovedFelts thank you so much! I’m still very much a beginner and have only just completed my first dog. I’ve got a whale to do next by Philippa felts and hoping I can find a video tutorial for my next project after that. I find video tutorials so helpful! If you ever do video tutorials for dogs please do let me know! I’d be really interested, your Spaniel looks so realistic!

Wow!!! Even your pen and paper eye was incredible, but this entire spaniel head is amazing. You've really captured the life and love perfectly. I'm half way through making a very small Jack Russell Terrier, less than 1/4 the size of your dog, but I'll do my best. Thanks for the thorough description and inspiration 🐾

I just discovered needle felting a week ago and I'm obsessed. I've only made one silly little dog from an Amazon kit but I'm going to practice realistic animals and this inspired me to make a felt replica of my beloved dog who passed a couple years ago. This video is so helpful. Thank you for sharing your talent and valuable tips with us.

@@FittobeLovedFeltsI meant to add that I had not seen the last couple of minutes as I got interrupted. But the end result was amazing. Beautiful work, the head is so realistic. So nice to hear an english accent too! I am in Australia and I have a friend in Canada who has a schnauzer, a gorgeous animal and I used a photo of it as a reference when making a full body model for her. It is only about 6 inches high and 3 wide but I really wanted the eyes to be a feature. That is how I came across your video. I have been needle felting for about 10 yrs. I strive for an approximation rather than a replication when doing animals. If it is recognisable then I am satisfied. I want the hobby to be enjoyable, and not bash myself trying to be what I am not…ie perfect. I have sold a lot of items and had lots of commissions over the years so it must be okay. But I would love to be as talented as you obviously are. I have saved your channel so I can refer if I need to. Thanks again.

@@PetroicaRodinogaster264 such lovely comments. Thank you! So lovely you have commissions and enjoy it. I often struggle to get animals like the real pet though like you the customers like them lol. I do find it too much pressure so have stopped for a bit to concentrate on tutorials and making things I love. Still very much learning as I go. Thank you for stopping by to watch and comment. So lovely to chat with others across the other side of the planet ❤️ 😀

@@FittobeLovedFelts I’m like you really I stopped doing commissions because they became just too stressful trying to get what other people wanted rather than what I wanted. Now I just do what I like and enjoy it and also I don’t want it to be a business I wanted to be a hobby. I’m 70 years old and so now I just please myself and then if somebody else likes what I make they can have it. The dog I have made for my friend in Canada is as a present for her she didn’t ask for it and so I hope she’s happy with that when I send it.

It is truly comparable to painting. I had no idea. The way the beginning stage of the iris looks rather cheesy, or fake, is a relatable thing when you paint. It is likewise remarkable how additions of detail really bring them to fruition. I’ve worked with dogs (cats too) closely for nearly 15 years. You come to learn them through their eyes, and expression. I always thought these eyes were glass. I never imagined you could get this effect from felt alone. Incredible.

I am always amazed with one thing about eyes…they may look good, even real but until the white dot of reflected light goes into them they are lifeless. It make all the difference. I liken it to the expression, “the light went out in his eyes and he was gone” And the eyebrows and movement of the eyes of a dog are so intriguing. My girl is very communicative with her face. She is 9 and I have learn’t what she wants most of the time by her expressions.She has very definite eyebrows and she manipulates them and me to get what she wants.

@@FittobeLovedFelts I have a cross between a pomeranian and long hair chihuahua. her name is Rosie, (Common name though not an official breed, is pomchi). Can be a barker but I have trained her not to, though she will start, I give her a look and she stops. She is chatty though and she has sounds she makes that mean things and I understand. She understand most of what I say too. I have had her since she was 9 wks and she is now 9 yrs. The love of my life. Very smart, like having a toddler all the time. I really relate when you say that you prefer animals to humans. Animals are much easier to understand and get along with. She is ginger/red on top and cream underneath. Her fur gets very long but during the summer I cut it back quite short. I have done her head in wool but the thought of the body and all that fur daunts me.
