Wow! I can see how you can create realistic rocks by using plaster and carving out the shape with your knife. It is certainly an option I can use when I create my rock formation. Thank you for making this video and for sharing your techniques.

I would love to thank you for such a well made video. After numorous purchased molds and failed attemps at making rock facing I had nearly given up. If it did not crumbled it looked like a blob. But now I have made some convincing rocks. Which I enjoy and have made my grandkids go ahhh. One thinks I have special powers and can shrink things. LOL. TY very much for the instructional

Great Videos (how to make rocks) !! Great layout location. I rode a freight over Tehachapi Loop in 1976 ! I'm just learning scenery ( N scale ) so I really appreciate this kind of stuff. YOU make it look easy ! Not so easy. I live in Roseville, Calif, about one block from the U.P. ( Southern Pacific ) engine house and the hump is just a half mile away. The Sierra Nevada Range starts in five miles and Donner Summit and the Snow Sheds are an hour away. On Google earth we are a Four Way Hub. One line North to Seattle, one south to L.A., one west to S.F. and really Two east , one is Donner Summit and the other is Feather River Canyon. Empties east over Donner, loaded west through the Feather River, a little less steep.

This is just amazing ! So beautiful ! The most realistic and beautiful mountain scenery i have ever seen so far. Problem is, this is not only a matter of technique. You can show us how you do this, and it is certainly worth of it. But, eventually, what makes your rocks so beautiful, is their shapes, the rythm and variety of smaller and bigger parts and to do this at the level you achieve, you need a true artistic eye and feel. That's with no doubt your case, but not the case of everybody. Whatever, i'm gonna try, too... thanks a lot for the tips and congratulations again.

Time should never be a factor in any hobby.
@remlya6 жыл бұрын
Time is always a factor. Most people have a finite amount of time to devote to a hobby. Unless they’re retired. If someone spends 2 hours on a method that can be accomplished in half the time because they don’t know how to do it more efficiently, then they’ve wasted time that they could have spent doing something else.
@rva19456 жыл бұрын
@@remlya I meant, you should never give up a hobby just because it takes time. You should enjoy the time it takes! So no matter how long to takes to finish the layout as long as you are enjoying it. I can barely use 2 hs a day and not on a daily basis. Never mind, I enjoy my still unfinished layout.

Woooow this is one heck of rock forming job! great work, excellent outcome of your effort. The best rocks I have seen. At one point I have noticed you had tried to lever the rock off with the knife but the blade just keeps bending as if there were not enough force to break the plaster off. Have you ever tried with sometning more sturdy, a wide screwdriver maybe? Anyway, amazing rocks!
@winterhaydn56406 жыл бұрын
I was thinking maybe it'd be good to tint the plaster beforehand, and then paint extra detail when it's dry .... then you could also save those tiny bits of plaster to use for ground cover/filler as scattered rocks. Just an idea.

UTUBE holds a treasury of rock modeling skills from foam to this free modeling technique. Just a couple years ago there was nothing. Your tutorial is incredible. Your results are mind boggeling! Just incredible. Im wondering if a different modeling material that will hold up under water will work as well as the plaster does? I would like to do this in a vivarium that will have a waterfall.

Having been a mountaineer, I would say that there are many different types of rock. Yours look like sandstone, rather than slate, basalt, granite, chalk, dolomite, coal, and they all have different textures, and dangers. Your sandstone looks great, by the way. I am having slate on my next layout, nice and wet, and slippery, and home to moles.

What kind of plaster do you use? I use hydrocal mixed with vinegar to slow the setting process. I use water on my brush as the hydrocal is very hard and dries fast . I let it set then carve the details, smoothing it with a little water. Perhaps a softer plaster will enable me to use the dry method of carving? Thanks for the wonderful video! ( I live in Las Vegas Nevada and the rocksyou carve look like the ones I see everyday) Viele Danke!
