The trunk opening can be adjusted to the desired height. When you're done with the kayaks, set it back to the default height. It's in the owner manual.

lol I just said the same thing. Although not sure if Subaru has that feature as I don't have a Subaru.

Good stuff! 😎 Two, very minor suggestions. 1. Make OSHA happy and chamfer the ends of the studs so you get a round dent in your head when exiting the vehicle vs. a gash. 2. Adhere a piece of 1 - 2mm rubber sheet to the u-bolt plates so the bracket/rack connections aren't metal to metal. Protect your rack finish and minimize potential for slippage. Rubber on additional plates between stud and rack possibly as well. Back in the day, my father was a master DIY roof rack guy. I swear he bought new cars just so he could tinker out new rack fabrications for our camping trips. Awesome pulley systems to lift the 16' canoe off the car that doubled as permanent storage hanger as well.

Good tips! Another one is that a lot of automatic rear hatch doors will pause in their opening if you hit the open button once while it's opening, quickly (so don't hold it). So it will stop halfway (or whenever you press it) instead of opening up and hitting your roof rack items. Then press it again and it will close. But yeah, it can be annoying for sure.

As I have done it to put a silly large Hobie kayak on my small fiesta car and built quite the outfit rack to transport my kayak. Here is what I'd recommend, adding some padding material will help to prevent slippage of the rack, vibration (noise), and damages to the vehicle rails. I've permanently damaged my roof bars dying things with my wood assembly. The mounting hardware will need padding! Also, using split or spring washer is not ideal unless used with the right hardware and torque spec. Even if you were to use Nord-Lock with the wrong torque spec it would still not perform at its best. Kayaks or any large objects on a roof rack can definitely put up a decent amount of vibration over long distance trips.
To set height of the hands-free tailgate on your Subaru follow 3 steps. 1. Start with liftgate fully closed. 2. Press & hold the tailgate release button on your key fob for 5 seconds. This activates the tailgate height adjustment mode. 3. Now adjust height of tailgate by manually lifting or lowering to your desired spot, when at the preferred height, 4. Press and hold the tailgate release button again for 5 seconds to save the setting.

This works! I've used 2 X 4s to extend racks already mounted on the roof by strapping the 2 X 4s to the bars. But really, if you extend these too far you have to watch your head!

Good job Claus! I few things I’ve learned in the past that you might consider is splitting some 3/8 fuel hose or clear tubing and put on the u-bolts to keep from damaging the existing rail, if you have room, and use self locking nuts.
@TomBow6066 ай бұрын
Another idea, you could use heat shrink tubing on the u-bolts

They want you to crush that bar and then ya say to yourself crap now I have to get anew bar. Also hey Claus some cars have an auto stop for the trunk where ya open it all the way, then position it where ya want it to stop, then close it and the next time ya open it, it should stop where ya put it. MY wife's Mazda CX5 has that feature, Check to see if yours has it too.

So you want an aerodynamic 2 x 4. Get out your belt sanders and put a bull nose round over on your leading edges of the 2 x 4's and ends. Wont do much but keep the splinters from your fingers and fore arms.

Automated Wilderness, lol. The Subaru looks wild with the three kajaks on top. No objection on the design. I would probably paint the wood but the natural color of the wood also fits nicely with the kajaks.

Hi Claus! When you started to mention about the political climate in your country ages ago I wasn't so sure if it was too important. But now that these news and some a bit disturbing ones have finally arrived even to here Finland, I am just starting to see what's wrong in there in your country even though your country should be among the most liberal ones with my country Finland. SOME OF THE MOST RECENT MOVEMENTS ON WESTERN COUNTRIES seem to be completely and utterly trash.,I in some sense can understand the rise of sexual minorities and their 'fight', allthough I am very happy to like just women, but that is ofc just my problem, but all this woke cultuture and other nonsense is getting as bit under my skin. If you on top of that have crooked politicians, of which you wouldn't ever ask to come by... I don't really know what is going on. I mean politicians have lied always, that is no news, but sometimes listening these people I can have almost out-of-body experience and sometimes even an urgent need to fix someones nose. If these people would stand in late night in some burger que with drunk people, I don't really think that it would go just fine everytime.. What is even more puzzling is that who the hell vote these people??? One of my work mates said to me years ago, that 90% of people are complete morons, and finally I am staring to think the same way... just my opinion though...
