Lol my mum said thats now how you kugu the suka: you should use a hot rock from the umu to melt the sugar, rather than using a frying pan. Also, should've ku'i the ulu properly while its hot lol.

Lili Leuta, either way, in olden times, Samoans never had sugar. Our ancestors used a sweet part of a plant called a ti to sweeten certain foods.

Samoa Moni Kaleve. Coconut Sap Syrup. Just cut a flowering coconut branch, collect the sap and boil it. Still in use in Eastern Micronesia and Polynesian Outliers.

LONG TIME AGO SAMOA USED TO USE THE SUGAR GAIN OR COCONUT WATER FROM THE NIUE. AND THE PEGU MEET OR COCONUT MEET TO MAKE THE MILK, AND THE MAA VEVELA WICH IS THE HOT ROCK FROM THE UMU. Wow! I dont realize that Samoan also eat breadfruit. I thought breadfruit only grow in Indonesia. Here we call it "sukun". Mostly we dont prepare it thoroughly, just simply steam it or deep fried it. Maybe thats why it taste kinda bland.

This is how grandma is gonna kaulaoa on her kaufolo. 😂 never heard of kaufolo only Kafolo. Se mālō Chef Ramshiki. Kuā fancy ga suka. Burn white sugar on hot rock with the pe’epe’e poured on it.
