HOW TO: MAKE SBC POWER WITH BASIC BOLT ONS (305, 327 & 350)

HOW DO YOU INCREASE THE POWER OF ANY SBC WITH BOLT ONS? CAN YOU ADD POWER TO YOUR 305, 327 OR 350 SMALL BLOCK CHEVY WITH PERFORMANCE HEADS, CAMS AND INTAKES (CARB AND HEADERS TOO)? SURE, EVERY SBC RESPONDS TO IMPROVEMENTS IN FLOW FROM BASIC BOLTS, AND HERE ARE THREE PERFECT EXAMPLES OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ADD BOLTS TO YOUR SMALL BLOCK. THE GREAT THING ABOUT SMALL BLOCK PERFORMANCE IS THAT THERE IS SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM, AND COMPONENTS TO FIT EVERY POWER NEED AND BUDGET. FULL DYNO RESULTS AS ALWAYS!

I would love for you to do identical 302/305/307 engines with TFS as cast 175 heads and hydraulic roller and roller rockers. I think it would surprise a lot of people. They are sbc and will all respond about the same. Different bore/stroke ratios. And don’t go crazy on the cam specs. These should be street friendly easy to drive with a standard shift.

WOW, some serious gains there, 100 hp gains is nothing to joke about. I will be 66 in December and when i was barely 16 someone a few streets over got a 64 Chevelle and he dropped in a nice 327/365 then put on headers and a Torker with a 780, back then AL heads werent even a dream except i think the L-88? That little 327 would run strong and yes rev high and he had 411 gears so i think it would have been in the 13's? You're 327 modern upgrades added an extra 100 hp so that will definitely be felt and seen in times and MPH. I had a 67 Camaro and dropped in a 427/425 so your little 327 bested that easily. Richard, do you remember Chevy used to sell late 60's/early 70's what they called ANGLE PLUG HEADS? Supposedly the idea was to use with at least 11 to 1 comp. or more and helped with flame travel over such huge piston domes? Do you know if they ever worked better that the straight plug 202's?

I pieced together my buddy's .040 305 with stock 58cc heads, ram horn manifolds and a holley contender dual plane intake, 600 cfm holley and a .450/.455 crane cam, I forget the duration, but it's a mean little sbc. I would still REALLY like to see someone take a 110 HP Olds 260 and do some custom work to it just to see how much it can make. I had one in my 76 Skylark sedan and it only had 34k miles on it with a Rochester 2bbl and even when it was in the negatives with a foot of snow on the car, you'd pump the gas twice, turn the key, and it would fire up on the 2nd rotation. That was one of my most reliable cars that I've ever owned and it was given to me. I could get it up to 80 on the Turnpike and it would just cruise. It took a while to get to 80, but it'd do it. It also had ice cold air conditioning and it would heat you out in the winter.

Seen some stroked lb9 back in the day running a procharger with old super 23 trick flow heads, with no valve reliefs and small bore it ran way better than most think it could, and on pump gas. Somebody told me long ago....an engine doesn't know what size it it, what parts it has inside, what brand or color it is, what planet it's on, what the brochure says it should do, what car it's going into, or what kind of fuel it's ingesting or if a power adder is connected. It does know at this exact moment I can do this with that. More fuel = more power, if the airflow is better, more power, if the exhaust is better more power, if ignition can ignite the fuel at that moment in time, it will continue to run near peak potential ect. That somebody was Jim Kinsler, Kinsler Fuel Injection, Troy Michigan 1983. A very interesting and smart guy for sure.

Ha I just put together a 350 similar to your final 350. Same cam, 70cc 165cc runner Summit cast iron heads, wound up 9:1 and plan to run a 144 B&M on it. 2500 stall with that cam should be good, yeah? Figured a good candidate for 5-6 psi.

Personally, I've grown up with month after month year after year seeing nothing but Chevy articles. It got to the point of what can you learn continuing to read the same stuff over and over. I guess it's the no brains syndrome these later generations past the 60's have. Everything is easy for everyone. It's called 1-800-send me one. But it won't change ever. The difference really, what you're made of. No effort, or be a thinking man. A real challenge is out running them. A lot of work but that's the way the old guys did everything. It was really fun to be successful with using your brain. Don't need to today. BIg WHOP.

We got 365 hp on the dyno. Could have squeezed more out of her . One of my regrets 😔 never got to turbo her. The 305 obviously cant fit the valves of a 4" bore. But if we compare power in terms of bore area and torque in terms of displacement its probably adequate for the era and when built for power would be respectable. Other than tbi heads the flow for valve area isnt that bad and the stock 302 heads werent always that good. The 305 might not be the brute force engine of choice but its not an inefficient engine and the heads are perfectly suited for 283 and 307 leftovers from the 1960's that could use compression and have a little less shrouding on the bores.

Yea i feel like too many thrash talk on the 305 a little too much just because that is the "norm" I have a 305 tbi in my caprice and yes Its not fast but really you dont need more to get up to 50-55 (as most speedlimits or roadcontidions here in sweden allow) great on fuel also. I mean pepole get like 200+ hp from an old Volvo 4 cylinder from the 70s so the 305 shouldn't be to hard to get above that. Its not a "small" engine as some people like to say. 5 L Is pretty big especially over here
