Great video. I'm gonna do the same but with a mylar bag instead of the mason jar. I wish this was more popular - would be great to see people making content where they germinate 10 year old seeds

I have been storing my seeds (all very dry) in there original Packaging or other plastic bags in a plastic storage container for a few years in a cabinet in my garage. I live in the Houston, Texas area and it gets really hot here. I planted some (a bunch) three year old seeds recently that did not germinate😢. My point being is seeds need to be kept cold to stay Viable and I will be storing my seeds in the freezer from now on Because I like to stock up on seeds when I find them on sale. I plan on vacuum sealing them to conserve space.

That's rough. I hope your future seeds do better!

You can also keep em in abscisic acid (plant hormone) which Will keep it dormant (just make sure You rinse em when You need em)

Good idea!

Could you explain your process of using abscisic acid with your seeds? Thanks.

I dip all my seeds into spf 50+ sunscreen and leave em on the beach. Never seen one get sunburnt, or germinate.

the paper packets block out most of the UV already, but the dark container couldn't hurt.

Can I vacuum seal them? I have pounds of sprouting seeds, so those little jars wont work. Can I take a vacuum bag, pull out air, and seal.

Definitely!

Can you use rice to suck the moisture out as well?
@GroundedRoots Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea! I would imagine it would have a similar effect, but I can't say for sure. If you try it let me know how it worked 😁

I enjoyed your video very much, and I am planning on adding long-term frozen seed storage. When you said you buy your desiccate in bulk, what amount would that be . I looked at your link. They have a variety of container sizes. And how many times can this Desiccate be reused? Thank you very much.
@GroundedRoots Жыл бұрын
I have a 1 gallon container of it that I bought. It can be reused as many times as you want. Just "recharge" it by putting it in the oven around 200f for an hour or two when it changes color
@mauricioacosta74924 ай бұрын
how long would they last now?
@Tablefornine2 жыл бұрын
Do you use the same desiccant from year to year?
@GroundedRoots2 жыл бұрын
Yes I do. Desiccant doesn't really go bad under normal conditions. I usually recharge it every year by placing the desiccant on a pan in the oven set at 225°F for about an hour. This dries the moisture out of it and it's ready to go again

What about Cosmos Flower Seeds? Should they be stored in the Freezer as well? I will make sure its dark and dry.
@GroundedRoots2 жыл бұрын
Those should store just fine in the freezer
@radessvk44412 жыл бұрын
Thanks,what about temperature?is there any range u want to be aware of?
@GroundedRoots2 жыл бұрын
Colder is better, but just he careful about taking it below freezing unless you know the seeds are completely dry as any ice crystals can kill the seeds
@theageingadventurers4283 Жыл бұрын
Seedbanks store at -18C I believe. But again; dry.

Just how much UV light do you get in the middle of your house and inside your fridge? You are being OVERLY cautious to the point of ridiculous with the UV light issue.

Informative and really helpfull. I am from Bangladesh. "Bangladesh has a humid, warm climate influenced by pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon circulations and frequently experiences heavy precipitation and tropical cyclones. Bangladesh's historical climate has experienced average temperatures around 26⁰C, but range between 15⁰C and 34⁰C throughout the year. - worldbank climate" I'm really interested in preserving seeds for a very long time.

This is neat and all but i am the type of person that like staring at my seed collections in the jars just to see the different types of seeds. Of course there is not much outside light getting into my bedroom anyways so i suppose it don't really matter, if i let light in it would glare up my TV's so fucking bad

Hi Grounded Roots, I was wondering if you can store raw Pomegrate seeds for a long time (1 to 2 years)?

As long as you have properly dried them out, they should last just as long as any other seed
