This process is called "Retting" and it was traditionally used as a method by some native cultures to get strong plant fibers out of thick stubborn plants not easily processed by hand (such as hemp or yucca) for making natural cordage (rope using the reverse wrap method in case anyone wants to youtu e it and learn it). Making natural (and not so natural. Like plastic bag) cordage is an amazingly useful skill i feel everyone should know ^_^

For a large scale production over 3 bags of leaves, retting peepal leaves in a large bucket of water and mud in 3:2 ratio and stirring it every 3 days is easier and quicker. Takes less than 15days and no need to brush, just rinse, leave it to dry in the air to remove the odour. I make greeting cards and notes with this technique for my friends and they love them.

Peepal leaves work the best. They are easiest to work with and will always give you the perfect result. Most of the other type of leaves either get damaged during the process or won't give you the same result as Peepal leaves. Thanks a lot ❤️ Peepal leaves work the best. They are easiest to work with and will always give you the perfect result. Most of the other type of leaves either get damaged during the process or won't give you the same result as Peepal leaves. But you can definitely experiment with different kind of leaves if you want but remember to choose leaves that are thick with strong vein network. Maple leaves, magnolia leaves and oak leaves are also some of the other options used by some people for this purpose.

Very cool! I wonder if this works for other types of leaves--or if the leaves aren't particularly fresh. I don't have any peepal leaves lying around, and I was thinking this might be a neat way to preserve a fallen leaf if it works on those!
@mariasartistry3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Yes, you can use the fallen leaves. Peepal trees are very common in Indian subcontinent. Not sure about other parts of the world. Peepal tree leaves work the best. They are easiest to work with and will always give you the perfect result. Most of the other type of leaves either get damaged during the process or won't give you the same result as Peepal leaves. But you can definitely experiment with different kind of leaves if you want but remember to choose leaves that are thick with strong vein network. Question; When the leaves are soaking, is there a specific place they should be kept? I.e. outdoors/indoors, somewhere dry, or hot, or cool, humid, etc.
@katek68083 жыл бұрын
Nah, works anywhere. I used to fish skeleton leaves out of the pond in our backyard. They had been in there for up to a couple of years, in all seasons and weather. Very simple.
@mariasartistry3 жыл бұрын
Its better to place the container in shade/dark and keep it covered. The process is faster in hot weather as compared to cold weather.

One or two spoons of baking soda would accelerate the process. It's also important to test leaves from different species, because not all of them make good skeletons. In my region I use a lot of avocado tree leaves, they are great for this, and their big size makes for an interesting effect. You can also brush only half of the leaf to simulate that the process is still happening, the result is beautiful.
