As I am very shy it was always very hard for me to start small talks. But since I have started to work in a restaurant beside my studies, I have become better at it. And I found that I actually like to communicate with people. There is no shame in having an unsuccessful small talk but there is a great feeling in having a successful one!
@GERntleMAN
@GERntleMAN 2 жыл бұрын
What made it easy for me to communicate with people was that I honestly didn't care (and still don't) how they feel or what they want. That way you don't feel the urge to live up to any expactation and get to know people faster and easier with the chance of actually caring after 5 minutes.

As a Brit, I think that the phrase "Hey, how are you?" and a standard reply such as "Oh fine thanks, how are you?" are often used as non-literal forms of social communication that, depending on tone, indicate how open you are to having a chat. I think it's great, because it removes the barrier to spontaneous conversation if somebody is in the mood for it. "Hey, how are you?" = "I am open to a conversation" "Oh fine thanks, how are you?" = "I am also open to a conversation" So I think it's disingenuous when people say that Brits (or Americans) aren't interested in knowing the answer to "Hey, how are you?". It's not fake, it's friendly.

@kendallwonderland158

I'm American and it maybe fake if the person is on the clock at work. The longer a person works the more artificial it will become simply due to fatigue. It's difficult following company policy and social protocols when exhausted. I'd say 9 times out of 10, here in Oregon, one can approach damn near anyone on the street, and have pleasant small talk. 😊✌️

Just to clarify, when Americans ask “how are you?” It’s not that they don’t want an answer, it’s just typically a feeler for how to proceed with the conversation.
@nellautumngirl

But what are you supposed to say? How your day is going? That seems potentially very awkward and/or too familiar
@Name-jw4sj
@Name-jw4sj 4 жыл бұрын
@@nellautumngirl When saying, "how are you" in America it is usually just another way to say "hello". For example, when my boss goes to vacation for a week and he comes back and I see him for the first time we usually start off with "hey welcome back, how are you?" then he responds and then it proceeds to the next topic, like "how was your trip?", etc. Also, "how are you" isn't considered small talk in America, it is just a more formal, elaborate "hello". Small talk in America usually is to exchange pleasantries like for example you mentioned "how is your day going", then the person usually responds honestly on how their day is going.
@nerdiloo9863
@nerdiloo9863 3 жыл бұрын
In US it's ok to have a negative response too. For example "Eh.. could be better..". The responder might even tell what happened (leading to a conversation) but if he/she doesn't, the inquirer will sense the mood and end it in a friendly manner e.g. "That's a bummer man, some days are like that.." or "Sorry to hear that." Countries are like a large family - 2 might like skiing, 3 might like singing, 2 others might like science etc., but no 2 are the same which is the way I like it. Natural.

MariusFraNorge_YT ...you’re correct in not every American is comfortable or interested in small talk. The only individuals who I’ve had weather focused small talk with, are farmers or gardeners. Generally, if I notice something interesting about a person, for example, the person has an interesting product while in line to check out, I’ll ask about the product. And in most cases, the small talk grows into an interesting conversation. But I’ve never walked up to a person and just asked about the weather, as he does in this video.

People want to be left alone, we are even less talkative than Germans. we actually consider them to be too direct and talkative. It's not that we are rude but reserved people. In the US and Mexico, it’s really common to have small talk. I feel like my parents are personally offended that I’m not very good at it and they think I’m being “rude.” I just don’t see the point in talking to someone without a purpose or reason. When I visited Berlin, I was surprised that a lot of people actually came up to me and started talking and asking from where I was from...so I think it just depends on the people

I'm English born and have been trying to teach myself German for a couple of years, I'm also very poor at making small talk, but sometimes I find myself in circumstances when it is forced upon me, for example, when I'm out walking my dog other dog walkers will start conversations with me and although I'm always polite my naturaly introvert nature makes it feel uncomfortable for me. Well, yes. To boil it down, we make it hard for everyone including ourselves. Basically everything, which results in a unique mentality focused on usefulness and direction. And I'm as german as it gets in that regard. However, seeing that the world is vast and amazingly interesting, I'm pretty open and approachable, if done correctly. Meaning, either really funny and original or polite. That sounded german. Well, yeah. I put a lot of emphasis in manners, respect and humour.

It could also be the division between state and people, plus, privacy is kind of a big deal here. If I were interviewed publicly, with camera and everyting, I'd probably say almost anything conforming. Simply because these things don't really matter anyway. The people close to you, do. Granted, this can be used to spin a narrative of something being a majority view, even though it's just people agreeing to get it out of the way, but at the same time this only works on those who don't know. Foreigners for example. They might hear reports of "Germans think this or that" but in reality, if you think you know what Germans are thinking, then you don't know what Germans are thinking. Usually, anyway. That said, I guess I can do smalltalk but it truly is not something I think about, so it tends to catch me off guard a bit, and if I am off guard, then I'm actually on guard :P So you won't be talking to my true self, even during smalltalk.

Also, I realize that that is a tad dishonest, but, perhaps look at it this way: There have been cases in Germany where women who wore braided twin tails, and had naturally blonde hair, were stopped by police to be questioned about it. And if such things make you seem like the next obersturmbandführer...then someone talking to you, out of the blue...well, is that really trustworthy? "I'm just making smalltalk cause I'm bored" Yeah, maybe. But as sad as it is, many 'just normal things' are being seen as 'bad' (You might already be painting some picture about me right now reading this just because I bring this up) and the powers that be do want people to report such things. In fact, I think not elaborating on these things is more fun right now, exactly because people are probably putting some horror scenario in their heads now. And if you do, even though I can assure you that I'm not thinking of anything unsavory, then maybe you can understand some hesitation on the matter of idle chatter.

By “Celtic Influence” I mean that English are a Germanic people/nation as well but we have lived beside our Celtic neighbours for so long that I feel that’s why we are more social than say Germans or Norwegians etc. Also at the same time I find most German behavioural and cultural norms much more natural to mine. I’ve been around other European peoples and their social norms feel much, much more strange to me. Let me note that strange doesn’t always mean bad, just unfamiliar and perhaps uncomfortable for me. This is human nature I don’t mean any insult! So basically I might find it unfortunate that more people didn’t want to chat with me while visiting Germany however I’d still feel very comfortable there as compared to me walking around in Serbia/Poland.

We are from South Australia and whenever we visit friends and relatives in Germany, there is a lot of small talk between us. We would never greet them with "wie geht's zusammen, und worauf seid ihr heute fixiert?" We smile and say hello to strangers there and they normally do the same to us. Don't think you have a problem, really, Manuel.

The lady at second .50 is the best example of how the germans are at the moment they start to interact with someone they are just coming across; but later, if you are lucky enough, they eventually open themselves and can completely change and express their hidden personality. This phenomenon can be easily shown while germans travel, particularly to destinations with a warmer climate.

I am American, and when I ask a stranger or someone I don’t know “Hi! How are you?” or “Hi! How’s it goin’?” I genuinely care and am not just saying it as some people may think. If people don’t care, they won’t ask “how are you?” They will just say hi or nod. This is what I notice. I like to be friendly to people, and I find that when I ask someone how they are doing, they really appreciate someone caring enough to ask. I will mention I’m super introverted, but I feel that it’s polite to people as you greet them to ask how they are. They are another person just like you. It shows you respect and appreciate them (especially when it’s a clerk at a store or waitress or waiter) I find it brightens people’s day a bit 😊 when I lived in Germany my friends looked at me weird like “why did you just ask them how they are doing” lol 😅 but I truly like to be friendly and kind to others. ❤

Small talk is such a staple of British culture 😂 Usually it is to ease possible awkwardness or initiate authentic conversations. It can at times be draining when it is impersonal/doesn't lead to good conversation. However it can be a good avenue if you're genuinely wanting to get to know someone. So interesting watching how Germans find it 😅 They'd be stunned how ingrained it is here, host did a great job getting people to ease up.

Yeah but I think he has the advantage of doing something where the focus is not the smalltalk itself. He probably asked them if they want to take part, explained that he was running a youtube channel about learning german, and also told them it was going to be about small talk. That kind of framing makes it far easier and less akward to start small talk.

Where I live in Arizona, the majority of small talk has to due with the extreme summer weather, particularly with people from elsewhere. People visiting especially first-timers are usually so shocked to be feeling 45-49C weather that they can't find anything else to talk about besides how awful it is being outdoors lol. I'd say a solid 80% of the small talk conversations I have with customers at work is them complaining about the weather in the summer, saying "isn't it nice to be able to go outside again" once summers passes, and "Ugh, summer is coming soon, enjoy being outside while you can" starting around march-april. I think USA as a whole, has way too many differences to lump up the whole country. My early childhood was in Philadelphia, rest of my youth was in North Carolina and now I'm in Arizona, so I can easily confirm interactions are pretty different depending on where you're at. You can't make a blanket statement like "Small talk in USA is this/that" bc the whole vibe is different depending on the regions or even just individual states. You can't talk to a stranger as openly in New York as you can in Georgia, so on and so forth.

@@sm3675 summer here is like winter other places - we limit outdoor activities, basically just things involving water, everything else you have to be pretty careful. A lot of people not native to Arizona end up getting rescued or dying from heat stroke here in summer bc they think just because it’s not a humid heat, that somehow all of a sudden makes it not 46° with a uv index of 11 outside and will try to go hiking. And yes, our cost of living and electricity bills are very high especially in summer. I try to make it up north in the state on days off work; contrary to popular belief less than half of AZ Is desert and the rest of the state is high elevation and pretty temperate. Like here in Phoenix today will be 37°, but up north in flagstaff will only be 22°. So we go to the northern cities a lot in the summer for refuge

I've talked with some Germans and Scandinavians about how people in the US say "How are you?" and don't actually expect you tell tell them how you are. They find it rude that people would ask you how you are and not expect to hear your response. I tried to explain to them that it's just a common courtesy used between strangers and acquaintances like saying Hello. They simply don't understand it because it seems they take the meaning of the words literally and can't see how it could be taken as an empty courtesy.

Interesting video, it's also interesting to see how many similarities between languages. I come from Spain, but I speak catalan, a language we speak in Barcelona area, similar to spanish or french! It's funny to see how different it is from german and we still share words with the same writing and meaning! For example: the colours purple and blue, in catalan are: blau and lila, same than in german! The expression "yes, of course" in catalan is "ja, clar" in german, "ja, klar", funny right😉

Feel good? As a German, that was exactly what I found terrible in the USA. Again and again I was chatted by uninvited total strangers. What a waste of time.

@@EmilLotter If they knew that you were an antisocial person with no education at all, I'm sure they wouldn't talk to you. And one more thing the USA is not Germany, if you came here, try to adapt to the local customs, because the locals will not adapt to your customs. If that bothers you, just take a flight back to Germany

@@clovisdelins8490 You are 8 months late with your unsolicited advice. At the moment, the question of staying in the USA hardly arises, first of all the USA has to get Corona under control. You just have to explain to me how you get on the subject of education. Does small talk about sport and weather count as education in the USA? Is there a master's degree in small talk? That would explain a lot about the American level of education ...

@@EmilLotter Well, we’re on KZbin, a public platform, so I don’t need you to ask me for advice. As for education, here in the United States when a person says hello, you answer back for pure education even if you don’t know the person, it’s a basic rule of EDUCATION here, which apparently you don’t know, and again, when you travel to another country you have to adapt to the local culture, the people here will not adapt to you simply because you don't like small talk. Learn to have a little more respect for the culture of others, you are not the center of the world

It is usually considered rude to talk about money with others in the US, and definitely not something for small talk! At least in my experience

It's very interesting. Must say, I also had the impression that US Americans are much more at ease in talking about money than the European. Like, a question such as "How much you earn" seemed more acceptable.

I once had a skype call with a German colleague, and started the conversation by saying Hello and followed by "How are you?". His response was "hmm?" initially 😂 now i understand why. I am used to start a conversation with a small talk when its only 2 of us (im referring to other colleagues) in a call. But i guess not everyone else is used to be the receiving end of such "unnecessary" question. I learnt something here. Thanks!

Things I learned in this podcast: (1) if you want to make small talk with a German, talk about beer (that seemed the easiest, most natural topic when it came up) (2) Americans start small talk with compliments. I'm an American and I've never really noticed how much we do that.

In South Africa it’s a mix. It depends where you are but in most cases everyone is very friendly and we can make small talk easily, very quickly, and we joke a lot. I often end up having very long conversations with people when I’m waiting in queues or with waiters at restaurants. To not continue a conversation is considered rude

It takes a little while but is worth it!, Finns talk about all sorts of interesting things - once you get them started ;P But thankfully once topic is explored they don't just talk for the sake of it, and are happy to relax back into communicable silence. Its sooo nice!

I am an autistic female and I must say I find this small talk dislike a quite relieving thing about Germans :D (whom I considered to exhibit similar traits to autistics along with the Finns). but then again, I love small talk in more 'collectivist' countries and communities, like Latin America or Western Ukraine. it's genuine, unlike the mechanical US/UK small talk in which people don't really care as much about cheering up your day as much as they care about fulfilling certain social etiquette.
